I'm gonna scream!

"We can order it for you!"

Power supply - "We can order it for you."

Mobo - "We can order if for you."

1 Gig stick of RAM - "We can order it for you."

And so it went.

Store after store... "We can order it for you."

This is in a city of over 700,000 people for crying out loud. Where is
all the current inventory?

Those of you that are able to go down to shops that stock current
technology should consider yourselves lucky.

Anyway, I also wanted to thank all of you for the insight that you've
helped provide me with. Thanks again!

haha yeah it is the story even on the internet, you order something and it
turns out that the item ordered was out of stock and needed to be ordered
direct from the manufacturer and could take up to 14 days

it makes me laugh no one must actually stock anything... they just get the
orders in and go to the manufacturer, its a joke. and all of the small
retailers that do actually stock certain main boards and ram etc they are
always more expensive! and end up going bust because no one goes there.

pity

te only website i havent had any bother from is ebuyer.co.uk / .com

I don't know about the other stuff, but order the RAM from www.kingston.com
or www.crucial.com. It arrives within one or two days - I don't recall - but
fast enough that I was happy.

One of the reasons I now order everything online. My local stores (from a
city larger than yours) only stock current mid-range technology and they
usually charge anywhere from 30-100% more than I could buy it online,
shipped. Their advice has often been outdated and questionable. In my
experience the local shops have not offered anything valuable enough to
offset their cost and lack of convenience. I'm not surprised that almost
every new computer store that opens, closes within a year, it's just about
impossible for them to compete with the big online guys.

This is why I've stopped shopping at little online stores. It just isn't
worth the hassle. Newegg.com, baby. That's the only place I even look at
anymore.

I usually start by looking at either www.pricescan.com
or www.bizrate.com. Or I just hit www.newegg.com,
www.mwave.com or www.thenerds.net for my stuff.

Between those (3) stores, I can almost always get what I
want and have it be in stock.

I never shop locally for computer components, it's
simply not worth it, and the shipping costs online are
often less then the markup at the local stores.

I do all my computer shopping at either Amazon.com or JR.com. I've only had
one incident at Amazon in which the product I ordered was out of stock. It
came in a few days later. I prefer to pay by check so I have to mail my orders
in. I've received most items within 10 days of me mailing in the order.
Sometimes I'll get the stuff within a week. Jr.com took a little longer since
they waited 3 weeks for my check to clear but they immediately shipped out the
merchandise as soon as the 3 weeks were up.
I tried ordering something from Techdepot.com but never again. First, after 3
weeks of placing my order and not hearing anything I contacted them. They said
they had no record of receiving my check. Well I got my bank statement back
and the check I had sent them was in there and it had been cashed by them.
Second, to make matters worse, I had written the check for ~$200.00 and the
bank that encoded the check encoded it for $900.00. So I had to take the check
to my bank and have them credit my account the $700.00 difference. Then I had
to contact Techdepot.com and have them send me a refund for the original
$200.00. I'm just glad I had a scanner on my computer so I could easily send
them a copy of the cancelled check.

Tell them you can go on the net and order it yourself.
Why do you even bother with those stores. If a store
does have a good selection of parts, then the prices will
probably be quite high.

We can, but who wants to pay 30%-100%+ more than internet prices?
If you ask the store to match the net price or even come close
to it, most stores get angry and tell you to leave. I needed a special
printer cable. On the net it was $10 plus $6 shipping. The local store
wanted $35 plus tax. I asked them why the price was so high, and
told them the net price. I offered them $15 for it, which they rejected,
then I told them my last offer was $20, which was also rejected.

None of them are buying sufficient quantity to make the
discount worth the risk of depreciation. Not to mention
that these parts are so competitively priced that store
real-estate is often taken by profit leaders. How much more
would you pay to have an item immedately (after having to
drive to/fro store) rather than two days later? 40%?

Newegg.com
:)

I never go to a local store to try and find what I want, way too much
hassle.
I will buy software from them, but that is about it.

Disclaimers:
1) With gasoline around two bucks a gallon, you wouldn't want to make a
special trip to try my suggestion.
2) I don't know if the suggestion is a good one, in terms of price - it's
just an idea worth looking at. Results may vary. Must be over 18. Void where
prohibited.

The suggestion:
Next time you need a cable, check the Staples web site. If they have what
you want and the price is right, call the local store with the part number
and see if they have it. If not, they deliver orders over fifty bucks for
free, usually the next day. Add an ink cartridge to jack up the order over
fifty bucks.
