Technically, no. You can do a repair install of XP. Sometimes these go
smoothly, sometimes not.
If it were me, I'd just bite the bullet and reinstall clean.

I tried the repair instal trick; I had to reinstall everything anyway.
If you're buying a cpu and mainboard and you really don't have the
time or ambition to reinstall everything, you can pretty much count on
having to reinstall everything.

I had a motherboard die on me, and could not get the same replacement. I
ended up going from an Nforce to Via chipset. Needless to say XP would not
play ball. So I did a fresh install, when it came to activating, I had to
telephone Microsoft, when speaking to the operator, I explained that the
motherboard had died, I couldn't get an exact replacement, but the rest of
the hardware was the same. They activated it no problem at all. Then I put
in my new cpu...

Further to the above, I'll just add that I had all my stuff backed up to dvd
before the reinstall, so music files and purchased programs could be
reinstalled no problem. Steam seems to be a bit fussy about dual layer dvds
though.......

I have had pretty good luck with a repair install after upgrading. It is not
a "slam dunk" though. The first thing I do is to remove all MB related
drivers like onboard sound, chipset (inf.) etc. (I even remove my video card
drivers too) Anything that is related to the old MB. Then shut down and
replace. Boot the XP CD and go along like you were doing a new install until
the point where the install disk detects the old XP install. You will then
have the option to repair it. Make sure you have the floppy for any raid or
sata drivers ready for the "F6" option for installation of them. Like I
said, it works fine MOST of the time. Make sure you have ALL of your
important data backed up before you begin. Good luck.

you dont have too, when you deinstall all mobo drivers first... but
better do so since there can be issues and there is no better time to
resetup a system than an hardware-upgrade.

imagine that lightspeed-fast new system after reinstalling.

just my thoughts and what i would do.

If activation was done originally more than four months before, you
shouldn't have trouble doing an automatic activation the second time around.

I did a lot of motherboard replacements in my repairshop
From my experience, I can tell you that if your new mobo will have th
same brand chipset (via, intel, etc) than your OS will boot withou
any preparations
If it doesn't, you just popin the XP cd, boot from it and perform
"repairinstall", this is : anwer first question to instal
with yes, than it will search for an existing installation, when i
finds you os than choose "r" to repair it. You have t
enter your licensekey and reactivate
Good luck
