IF function for Dates

How do I create an IF function where it will prompt me if I hav
exceeded the expiry date?

Eg. Assuming the expiry date for a product is sometime in the futur
(eg. 1st Dec 2004), and on the 2nd of Dec, it will be reflected that i
is expired by showing an "overdue", instead of "within-timeframe" in
cell?
