IF and Subtotal

I am trying to obtain YTD totals by month(rows)
eg. Click March...Jan - Mar Total = Great Results
My formula is highlighting SUBTOTAL (as error)after July.
IS there a MAX for Subtotal within an IF?????
I'm using a Data validation box to CLICK month,which
shouln't cause a problem.
Any help appreciated

=SUBTOTAL(4,Range)

will return the max value
Don't know what you mean by within an if?
