Having solved one of my earlier problems by downloading Adobe Reader 7.0 I am
ready to tackle repairing or reinstalling Internet Explorer for another
problem: being unable to 'chat' with Earthlink support. We exhausted all
proposed remedies: turning off Firewall, Norton, Popup Blocker etc. ELink
suggested that I must have a damaged Internet Explorer.

One of the links this group gave me was to go to ElderGeek, which I did.
How do I find out what version of Internet Explorer I have?
 
You can double check by opening internet explorer, clicking Help and then
about Internet Explorer, but as you are using XP, then you are going to be
using IE6
