I don't know if anyone here can help, but here goes. I am having a problem
where the shortcuts on my desktop have an internet explorer icon placed on
top of them. When windows starts the icons appear as normal until every
thing has been loaded then the internet explorer icon is placed over the top
of them. It doesn't affect all the icons as the following are left as is,

My Computer, Network Neighbourhood, My briefcase, My Documents, Recycle bin
and Microsoft Outlook 2000

If the open command is used on the start button the icons are overwritten in
the window. However using the start button as normal displays the icons
correctly via the menus. The computer is using windows me, explorer 6 and
has AVG antivirus installed. Internet access is via cable modem. I have run
AVG using the latest updates and it shows the computer as clear of any
viruses. I am running out of ideas on this one!. Any help or advice would be
helpful.

Could be a browser hijacker, or does turning on Auto Arrange help?
Do you know what these IE icons point to?
My Win98SE has been doing wierd things to the little Arrow[shortcut] overlay
for some time now.

Probably there is an iconcache problem in your system. This isn't
related to malware, but bad MS programming. Get the TweakUI program for
your OS (you didn't specify, which) from the Microsoft home page,
install it (with right click on the downloaded .inf file), locate
TweakUI in the system settings, run it, go to the "Repair" tab, open the
menu bar ("Repair Icons" should be on top, however) and have TweakUI fix
the Iconcache.

Hi Jack,

Auto arranging the icons makes no difference. I have spybot on the pc and
that shows up no problems but I will take another look for any hijackers.
When right clicking on the icon to display the properties, I find the
shortcuts are still being directed too and are starting the correct
programs.

Send me a mail. Mine's valid. I think I've got something that will help.

Or (assuming this is XP) juste delete the iconcache.db file under your
user ID, and reboot a couple of times to get it rebuilt. For earlier
versions of windows, the file is called shelliconcache, iirc.
