IEXPLORE invalid page fault SHDOCVW.DLL 0177:71005039

I've searched the Internet, and can't find a solution to
this problem I'm having: everytime I exit IE, and about
80% of the time I click on a link from email to a Web site
(for example, from a NYTimes email to their site) I get an
illegal operation error and the browser closes. I have
reproduced the full error message below. This first
started out of the blue with version 5.5, have since
updated to 6.0 and changed ISPs and I continue to have the
same problem.

Iexplore: This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down. If the problem persists, conact the
program vendor.


IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module SHDOCVW.DLL at 0177:71005039.
