Mostly the same here. In this WinXp Home there are 3 users all with
administrator and two are original users and one I recently added. Did a
bunch of Windows Update stuff(all) then did Adaware latest under the new
user an got >400 hits and removed them I guess. Adaware complained that
some couldn't be removed and ask to do more on a reboot and showed a screen
full(in a format not seen be me before) of stuff that needed to be
done/removed. On reboot Adaware showed just one thing to be done in the std
format and that was removed. What happened to that screen full?
All seemed normal for the newly added user including normal IE6 operation.
Knowing that Adaware often finds new stuff for other users(an Ad-aware BUG)
I decided to try the other two users and found that Adaware found ~6 things
but ALSO soon found IE6 was DOA for the other two(original) users. On
initial entry to IE6 the message " Failed to get data for 'ad' " and then
the full IE6 paint would occur with the home webpage and then IE6 would
abort and go away with another error dialog box and message. I also noticed
that the same " Failed to get data for 'ad' " message would appear for these
two older users when entering Control Panel and Windows Explorer but in
those two cases there was NO consequence after the error message was
dismissed as CP and WinExplorer would operate normally.
Everything was tried including the explicit CWSearch removal tool and
nothing helped. So I went to
www.microsoft.com and found the IE6SP1
download and tried to reinstall IE6. I thought IE6 was >= 10MB but the IE6
reinstall finished in seconds and walla..... all problems disappeared
including Control Panel and Windows Explorer.
Anybody have a clue?? What does the IE6SP1 download do in a few seconds as
obviously it's not a full IE6 reinstall AND Windows Update showed that all
previously installed updates/critical updates were all still there.
