I have Windows XP on 2 of my comptuers and both of them
come up with this condition: Internet explorer will simply
not open. The hourglass comes up for a second or two and
goes away.

The only way to fix this is to restart the computer, and
that only works for a limited period of time (anywhere
from 1 minute to an hour or so). On one of the two
affected computers I have all of the Windows XP and IE
updates and no updates on the other.

I can access the Internet through other means like a link
in Outlook Express...

Can someone please help?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

First eliminate any scumware.

If you can't get there in Internet Explorer, try pasting it into the Address
Bar in Windows Explorer.
Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

I would love to know if someone finds the solution to this problem. I
started having the same problem today and have yet to find anything
that fixes it.

I was having issues with Norton System Works 2004/Norton Internet
Security 2004 crashing daily so I uninstalled and reinstalled them.
After that IE did not work any longer. I have uninstalled all Symantec
products and it still does not work.

I used SpyBot and allowed it to fix every problem it found and IE
still does not work.

I am able to browse the web using Windows Explorer, but Internet
Explorer will not start.

From what I've read here, it appears that several people are having
this issue.

Any suggestions will be appreciated,

Chance

Go to Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced and uncheck "Enable third
party browser extensions."

Any change in IE?

I was finally able to fix my issue with IE6. I don't know if it will
work for everyone, but here it is.

First, I did a repair install of XP. This in itself did not fix the
problem, but it did allow me to reapply all the Windows updates and
patches. Use this with caution. For me, it has been potluck whether it
will preserve your current installation or overwrite it. Boot from the
XP install CD. At the first prompt, choose to install XP (not the
recovery console). At the next prompt, the installation will show that
an XP installation already exists and give the option to repair the
installation. Choose this option.

After the repair installation, I applied all updates and patches from
Windows update. I also uninstalled all IE plug-ins that I could find
in Add/Remove Programs.

After I rebooted, IE worked. I am not sure whether the updates/patches
or uninstalling the plug-ins fixed the problem. I would probably start
with uninstalling the plug-ins to see that fixes the problem.
