I am getting the following error whenever I close my IE 6 program:

"The instruction at "0x0125a584" referenced memory at "0x0125a584". The
memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program."

Any ideas what that might mean? It started several weeks ago after I got a
few Microsoft Security Updates that related to IE - doesn't happen all the
time, but it seems to be occurring more often. The program closes even before
I click on the OK, but I'm wondering what that message means.

I run Win XP Home on a P4 2.66GHz machine with 512 MB memory.

Thanks!

Is it this what you are getting

explorer.exe-Application Error
The instructions at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxx. The memory could
not be read.

Click OK to terminate the prog

Yes, that's the message - I guess the numbers may change when it happens -
I haven't noted that, but that is the message.

Do you know what it means?

Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem ...This occurred after reformatting the
hard drive..I am also using XP Home..The only 2000 application that I am
using is Word 2000 Professional. Iam concerned about following through on
Jan's suggestion since the operating system is XP. Any further thoughts

Yes, I have no 2000 apps either. I'm getting this message with XP Home - not
Win 2000. The document suggested by Jan does apply to 2000 - not XP. I
haven't reformatted - just downloaded some of the Microsoft updates and this
has been happening since then.

I'd love some other ideas also!

Hi,
This is often caused by another program (possibly malware- possibly
legitimate) interfering with Internet Explorer. If it doesn't happen every
time, it will be more difficult to troubleshoot, but...

If using XP SP2, go to IE> Tools. Manage add-ons. Disable unneeded add-ons
to see if the problem disappears.

If not using SP2, try BHODemon 2.0:
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
Disable any installed BHOs to see if one of them is causing the problem.

Then, download and run CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot.
See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Also note the security tips and other important information on that page.

If unsuccessful with those programs, you may have to post a HijackThis log
for analysis. Start at

steps then post a HijackThis log to the forum at

Be patient. It's a busy forum at times.

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
toolbars and other add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at any
program that might be interfering with IE. You may have to reinstall, or not
reinstall, a program.

Less likely, but one of the Security Updates could be causing the error
message. You could uninstall each for a day or so (be aware of the risk!) to
see if the error disappears.

Hi Don,

Thanks for these ideas.

I have SP1, not 2, so I'll look into those instructions.

I do run Ad-Aware regularly and have never had it catch a problem.

This behavior started after I downloaded several MS updates, so I'm thinking
one of those is the culprit - but deciding which will be a problem.

In your experience, will this situation get worse over time, or will the
problem likely remain as it is - it generally happens when I attempt to
close IE. IE will close but then I get that message!

Thanks for the advice - I'll see what I can figure out with your ideas!
