iexplore.exe application error

For the past few weeks I have been experiencing random browser freezes or
error messages upon closing out the browser. I can usually tell when this is
about to happen because the pages don't load correctly (wrong font size,
pictures don't load, etc.). The specific error message I tend to receive
states "The instruction at 0x1000494e referenced memory at 0x00000008. The
memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program."

I have read quite a few other posts from other members with the same issue
and most of the replies seem to indicate that this is the result of spyware,
malware and the like. Before making this post I ran through the usual
remedies: ran Spybot, Adaware, McAfee Spyware Removal, cleared Temporary
Internet files and cookies, disabled 3rd party browser extensions and any
add-ons that were not needed. When all of this failed I attempted to use
System Restore to restore my PC back to the last "good" configuration, which
to be safe I chose to go back three months. Well, obviously this has not
worked either and I'm still dealing with the occasional error messages as
listed above. As my final step, I posted my HijackThis log to the TomCoyote
forums in the hopes that someone there could help me. There hasn't been a
response since I posted several days ago and I'm very anxious to resolve this
issue.

Please give me any help or suggestions as to what might be causing this
issue. I've seen so many other folks who are having this problem and there
doesn't seem to be a direct solution. I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2. I
have all of the anti-spyware programs above as well as an active firewall and
virus protector. I seriously doubt that this is the result of spyware since
the only things I've ever found were your typical tracking cookies. Could
this perhaps be a parasite that has not been detected or a browser failure of
some sort? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks, Jan. I followed steps 1 and 2 to delete my history, cookies and temp
files and then ran sfc /scannow. Based on what I understand of this command,
this will correct any damaged/missing system files that might be causing
this, right? I was prompted to insert my Windows XP installation disc and
then it seemed to run through a complete file check. It did not prompt me on
what changes had been made, if any, so I assume that it just automatically
makes adjustments as needed.

Anyway, I will monitor this for the next few days to see if the problem
persists. If so, I will proceed in following the additional steps you
outlined in your response. Hopefully this has taken care of the problem,
though. Thanks again for all your help and happy holidays!

You're very welcome! Hopefully, it will take care of the problem. If not,
then come on back here to this thread so we can keep the chain of thought
going, and we'll see what else we can do.

Thank you, and Happy holidays to you and your family, too. :-)
