My son's account on my Windows Home XP computer, doesn't exit IE 6 cleanly.
He get's the following message when he exits:
"The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the
application at location 0x7c812a5b."
It doesn't seem to affect the PC or anything - just an annoying error
message. I've tried rebooting with no joy.

My account and my other son's account work fine - I do not get this message.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance,
Val

This error message is almost always due to one of three causes:

1. Malfunctioning RAM - the hexadecimal numbers you are seeing are
memory addresses. You can test your RAM here:

"Windows Memory Diagnostic"
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

While it's certainly possible that you have bad RAM, it's not the most
likely cause.

2. Viruses and other malware - You can determine this by exhaustively
testing your system. I say "exhaustively" because malware is becoming
increasingly difficult to catch.

While it's certainly possible that you have some type of infection, it's
still not the most likely cause. Here is the most likely cause:

3. A program active on your computer is not releasing its grip on a
memory address, making it impossible for Internet Explorer to shut down
on its own. By clicking 'OK' to the message you are, in effect, forcing
IE to shutdown.

What program would exhibit such chutzpah to Internet Explorer? It must
be a program that runs with Internet Explorer, such as an activex
control or a browser helper object (BHO).

Some helper, right?

To find out which one is the bad boy, the next time this happens open IE
and go to Tools > Manage Add-ons. One or more of the "Add-ons currently
loaded in Internet Explorer" is your candidate. Disable each one in turn
(which may require you to unload or uninstall the associated program)
until you find the culprit.

In my case, it was my advertising blocker.

There is another possible cause. In my opinion, this is also not the
most likely cause, but I would be remiss if I didn't tell you about it:

"You may receive a "The memory could not be read" error message when you
click certain Web site links in Internet Explorer 6"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899811

Happy hunting.

Ted,

Thanks for the help. Step 3 worked. The Big Fish Games Toolbar was the
culprit. I disabled it (thanks for telling me how - now I can get rid of the
annoying yahoo toolbar that keeps reappearing)

Val

PS I'm not sure why you put the most likely culprit as number 3 but I
started with that step :)

Step 3 worked for me too, turns out the confidentiality bar that norton 360
installs causes this to happen.

I've had it happen on both my computers.

the one to disable was

"norton confidential browser helper object"

disabled that one and it worked fine and hasnt caused any problems with
norton 360...yet...

Hi Ted

I also have this anoying problem. I have the IE6 but I cannot see the
"Manage Add-ons" in my Tools session for the option 3 you said. I don't have
Norton, I have Symantec. I didnt run the RAM check yet because I need to see
the implications first(this a company's computer).
Could you help me regarding the "Manage Add-ons" lacking?

Thanks in advanced.

Jvinicius

(1) Norton and Symantec are one and the same

(2) Right click on your IE icon on your desktop and select Properties. Then there select Programs. The at the bottom of that page you have a button that say's Manage Add Ons. Does this show up on your computer ???????

Hi Peter.

I did what you suggested but there is no "Manage Adds On " button. The
botton button I have is "Reset Web Settings". There is no "Manage Adds on"
button in my "Program" pop-up.
