IEXPLORE error

I get this message
"IEXPLORE has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL" and a click
closes my browser
when I open some, but not all web sites. For example, I
cannot open the Microsoft Updates web site yet I can open
this one.

Any thoughts?

IE is version 6.0 .2800.1170. I have two MSHTML.DLL
files, one created in Feb 03 and the other created Aug 8,
03, both are version 6.0

MSHTML.DLL may be version 6.00.2800.1170 but that's not a valid IE version.
Post the complete error message.

If installed, uninstall Yahoo Companion and Google Toolbar.

If MSHTML.DLL is version 6.00.2800.1170 and neither Yahoo Companion or
Google Toolbar is installed (you'd know), look in IE Help>About>Update
Versions> Is Q818529 listed here? If not, you can install it via Windows
Update (anti-virus disabled the entire time, please).

Yes, Q818529 is listed. But if it were not, I couldn't
update as Windows update is the only site I cannot open.
It is what's giving me the error.

That is why it seems so unusual. What does Microsoft
Update site contain or do that it is one of the sites I
cannot open? The other is Saga Holidays. A random check
of other sites and there is no problem.

Can you go here?
Windows Update Troubleshooter

I do not have it now but it seems familiar. My son may
have had it installed in the past. But I am running IE
6.0, not 5.5

I will check the site you referred to.

Thanks

Checked the site. That is the exact error that I am
receiving but site's solution is to delete Gator and I
have checked that Gator is not present.

No reference in site to IE 6.0 and I am definitedly
running 6.0

Thanks I will try it and post back tomorrow

Frank's got it nailed, I think. At Windows Update Troubleshooter, see
section entitled "General troubleshooting for scripting errors".

Remember to always disable your anti-virus application before installing MS
updates, Mike.

Tried suggestions 1,2,3. They didn't work. Had trouble
getting back on internet. (think it was the use automated
configuration script that messed me) Afraid to try #4
suggestion as it appears to be changing registry and I am
worried I will do more damage than the problem.

Again it is only that I cannot get on the micrsoft update
site. Is there any other way of getting updates?
