IE8 Locking Up

I'm running IE8 on Windows XP Pro SP3 - all MS updates are current.

I am no longer able to open IE8 without using Internet Explorer in Safe Mode
[all add-ins disabled]. IE behaviour was normal when IE8 was installed. It
has become problematic over the last several days - to the point where it
will not load my home page and I have to use Process Explorer to kill the IE
process.

Any constructive suggestions to debug this issue would be appreciated.

[crosspost to IE General newsgroup]

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without
Add-ons; or

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

3b. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

4. Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
<=Just asking for now!!

Hi PA Bear,

1. The behaviour did NOT persist in IE [No Add-ons Mode]. That was how I
managed to make the original post to this forum. When I went to review your
post from the link in the email reply notification using IE with Add-ons, the
browser opened to the correct link but no information was populated in the
browser. I am replying to your post using IE7 on a different machine.

2. I would be willing to try Resetting my IE settings using the Reset IE
Settings tool after I see your response to this reply.

3. I am running a current version of Norton 360 Version 2.5.0.5 with
protection updates to June 5 2009. I also have installed and use Norton 360
Add-on Pack Version 2.1.0.55. I don't know about IE support for Norton 360
but I was using it without any apparent issues for at least a month after
installing IE8. The machine in question [HP dc5750 CMT p/n RK466AW#ABA] came
with a free trial version of Norton AV that was uninstalled using the Norton
registry cleaner prior to installation of the NFR version of Norton 360. The
only McAfee program ever installed on this machine is the McAfee Site
Advisor. It was installed when I was still using IE7 and upraded to IE8
without any apparent issues.

4. Windows Defender was uninstalled when Norton 360 was originally
installed. Other than Norton 360, there is no other antispyware installed on
this machine.

5. There is likely a restore point available prior to IE8. However, if
there is a possibility (however remote) that malware is causing this issue, I
have all data backed up to external USB drive and to offsite backup in the
cloud. I would prefer to reimage the hard drive back to factory settings,
reinstall my applications (100) and take a complete image using MDT tools.

Best regards,

Thanks for your answers. They'll really help us here!

If the behavior does not persist in No Add-ons mode, this page should give
you some ideas about how to determine which Add-on(s) is/are causing the
problem: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

That being said, only N360 v3.0 is supported in IE8. If your v2.5
subscription is current, you qualify for a free upgrade. Contact Symantec
Support.

THAT being said and despite what Symantec may say, I don't recommend
upgrading a Norton application. Instead, (1) uninstall the current version,
(2) download/run the Norton Removal Tool* (again), (3) reboot, (4) do a
clean-install of the new version, (5) reboot, and then (6) run LiveUpdate
manually & repeatedly until you get a "no more updates" prompt.

NB: After uninstalling N360 v2.5, make CERTAIN that the Windows Firewall is
enabled and don't do anything else online (e.g., browsing; email; chat;
other downloading) until you've got N360 v3.0 installed, *and* fully updated
via Live Update. (Installing v3.0 should automatically disable the Windows
Firewall, in favor of the Norton firewall, but you'd best double-check
that.)

Hi PA Bear,

I checked the troubleshooting IE Add-ons article. I then disabled the
Norton Add-ons and found Symantec Intrusion Prevention and Symantec Privacy
Add-ons were causing IE8 to lock-up/hang.

I then followed your recommendation to remove Norton 360 Version 2 using the
Norton Removal Tool (after backing up my settings and account information).
It was a very straight forward procedure to download and install the newer
version of Norton 360. In this case, I downloaded and installed a 30-day
trial version of Norton 360 Premium. I happen to have received an NFR copy
of Norton 360 V3.0 Standard but I wanted to evaluate the features of the
Premium version before my account expires at the end of the month.

I have tested the functionality of Norton 360 V3 Premium Ed and found it
much less resource intensive than Norton 360 V2. There is greater
flexibility in configuring scans and updates in the newer version. As well,
it has a default setting that prevents Norton 360 from scans and updates
until after the workstation has been idle for at least 10 minutes. This
frees resources on the workstation for primary applications that are actually
in use. The bottom line is the workstation is available for use more quickly
from login or boot with the new version.

Best of all, I have not encountered any issues with Internet Explorer 8
locking up or hanging since installing Norton 360 V3.

Thanks for your assistance in resolving this issue.

3b. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

4. Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install
of
IE8? <=Just asking for now!!

I'm running IE8 on Windows XP Pro SP3 - all MS updates are current.

I am no longer able to open IE8 without using Internet Explorer in
Safe
Mode
[all add-ins disabled]. IE behaviour was normal when IE8 was
installed.
It
has become problematic over the last several days - to the point
where
it
will not load my home page and I have to use Process Explorer to kill
the
IE
process.

Any constructive suggestions to debug this issue would be
appreciated.
