IE7

Since going to IE7, I can not view the Wisconsin Supercash Lottery numbers
in excel format.
You get there by going to the Wisconsin Lottery and click on Supercash and
then clicking on view "previous drawn page" and clicking on the "here" in the
line "You may also get all the previous winning numbers here!" and then click
on "Get in Excel Format"
It brings up a popup box; File Download - Security Warning, Do you want to
open or save this file. Whether I open or save I get a message saysing it
doesn't recognize the format (aspfile).

Im running Microsoft windows XP service pack 2. I didn't have any problems
viewing the numbers under IE6, so I believe this is a IE7 related problem.
Any suggestions other than going back to IE6 would be appreciated

It's actually HTML with this above it:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-TYPE" CONTENT="application/vnd.ms-excel">


Perhaps you just need to repair your XCel app?
E.g. to re-register that file type as (one of) its?

Perhaps IE6 was installed and then XCel was installed
which would be a difference as far as IE7 is concerned.
E.g. an equivalent scenario for it might only occur if you
either uninstalled/reinstalled Xcel or repaired it, to ensure
that its plug-in is used by IE7?


BTW in order to get that HTML treated as HTML by IE7
you would have to enable MIME sniffing. The way to do that is via
the security option "Open files based on content, not file extension"

Hmm... that in fact is supposed to be a default. Why isn't it working?...

Ah... Standards *bite* in IE7: Look where they put that META directive
in their source. I think it needs to go *inside* the <html> tag.
Outside it may look as if it's not valid HTML and then revert to the
original Content-Type: header: which would require a plugin.

Actually that tag seems superfluous while online anyway.
E.g. the response also includes this HTTP header:

Content-Type: application/vnd.ms-excel

Now if that Content-Type causes XCel, not its plugin to open this file does

Download the file, save it as HTML and see if XCel will open it?
Aha. Part of the heading says: Save this file as .xls
So really I guess what you should do instead of saving it as HTML
is save it directly as .xls. Then you could get XCel to open it.

FWIW the XCel Viewer doesn't like it. Perhaps then what that instruction
*really* means is: display the file in HTML (e.g. using IE), then do a Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c
and paste that into a Notepad window (or Xcel window if that works instead)
and then save that as .xls. E.g. that should eliminate all the HTML tags
which I'm not surprised to see that the XCel Viewer chokes on.
If you have the full Xcel app and it likes HTML like this then you could
avoid some of these steps.
