IE7 - What was all the fuss about ?

There I was, flipping through all the problems people were having with IE7
in several NG's, (only just flagged this one),
....and duing the past few days, began to suspect that I wouldn't have any
problems running IE7.

My only problem was getting rid of the msn crap that kept intercepting the
Home Page I set.

I did the "2 registry keys" fix but, don't feel too happy with that, seeing
as
msn has planted

Well, it looks like Mr. Softee was more on the ball than I first gave him
credit for. After having downloaded and removed IE7 twice because of the
humongous toolbar, I downloaded it a third time to compare some features with
Firefox. I find that Microsoft made a way to completely hide the toolbar, and
yet have full access to it. If you go to 'view' in the menu bar, and click on
'full screen', you get a full screen, and the toolbars—tabs and
all—completely disappear! But you still have full and easy access to them by
moving the mouse to the top of the screen. The toolbars are still there, but
with an auto-hide feature that lets you drop them down with the mouse. Only
the menu bar (file, edit, etc.) doesn't appear in the dropdown. To get it you
must 'restore down' the window (middle button, far upper right corner). Now,
with this feature, they have just restored my trust in the IE7 browser and,
in a sense, trampled on Firefox which isn't even in the same league. For me,
the problem of the huge toolbar that seemingly takes up so much screen has
been solved. Good one Microsoft!!!

Actualy I have used that in MIE for several years. It's an option on MIE

as I please.

I knew 'full screen' was always there in previous versions of IE as well. I
generally never used it, because it hides the menu bar and the url. In IE6, I
could reduce all the toolbars--including the menu bar and the url--down into
a single thin toolbar with everything I need, and still have most of the
screen to display the website. In IE7 that is impossible. The smallest the
toolbar can be made is three rows if the menu bar is included. That seemed
like a huge sacrifice of screen space, and I was not happy with IE7 because
of it. It looks like the way around the now-gargantuan toolbar is to use the
full-screen with auto-hide. The tabbed browsing is definitely a welcome
addition.

It was cross-posted to both- groups. My error, I did not notice the
cross-post at the time I posted my reply.

Hope this helps.

Try pressing F11 instead? ; )

But you still have full and easy access to them by moving the mouse to the top of the screen.
The toolbars are still there, but with an auto-hide feature that lets you drop them down with the mouse.
Only the menu bar (file, edit, etc.) doesn't appear in the dropdown.
To get it you must 'restore down' the window (middle button, far upper
right corner).

Actually, there are two other alternatives which you might like to try.

First, if you like using your keyboard (and can remember the shortcut keys
for the various Menu bar menus <w>) you can press Alt- and the letter
for the menu you want to open. E.g. Alt-a if you want to use your Favorites.
Tip: if you remember one but can't remember the shortcut of an adjacent menu
just press a Cursor key and the next menu will drop down instead.

Unfortunately, they didn't accept my suggestion to make the bar unhide
as soon as you press Ctrl-e, e.g. to use the Search bar in Fullscreen mode
because although you can use it you can't see what you're doing while you're
using it. Consequently, the alternative that I find myself using the most
is to toggle off Auto-Hide (e.g. using Alt-Space,H). An advantage of this
is that I get all of my toolbars with what is essentially a Fullscreen window
(e.g. an IE window which is easily toggled back into normal mode by pressing F11.)

One warning about using Fullscreeen mode--a really annoying compatibility issue.
Fullscreen mode seems to be limited to a fixed number of windows.
So you may find when you try to press F11 to try to toggle a normal mode window
into Fullscreen mode that nothing happens. In that case you have to go on a hunt
for another IE window which is already in Fullscreen mode, press F11 to toggle it
out of it, and then try to find your way back to the window which you wanted to toggle
into Fullscreen mode in the first place. It is a huge distraction. I am trying to train
myself before switching from an IE window which is in Fullscreen mode to toggle it
back to normal mode to try to avoid this problem but old habits, such as spinning
through the Alt-Tab list, are very hard to break. ; }
