I had a problem with my system and had to recover the operating system. I
applied SP2 and then tried to launch IE7 (which I had installed) to get the
latest updates. It failed to load with the error 'The procedure entrypoint
InternetGetSecurityInfoByURL could not be located in the dynamic link library
WININET.dll'' I tried to uninstall IE7 but it would not let me with the
error 'An error occurred while trying to remove Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2
Preview. It may have already been uninstalled'. I tried ti install IE6 but
it said that I has a newer version and would not let me. When I tried to
install IE7 again, it said it was already installed.

What can I do to get IE working again.

Many thanks,
Mike

B. Uninstalling IE7 B2P:

Please read! =>
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/03/21/87123.aspx

1. First try uninstalling via Add/Remove Programs. (Make sure Show Updates
box is checked if you're /not/ uninstalling IE7 B2P Build 5335.)

If IE7 isn't found there, try the following, compiled by/courtesy of MVP
Sandi Hardmeier:

2. Run the commandline

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

[%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (according to the
dated Release Notes)]

Replace %windir% (above) with the path to your Windows folder, most often
'C:\Windows'. Make sure Show Hidden File and Folders is enabled via Control
Panel > Folder Options.

or

3. Go to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click on Internet Explorer > New String Value > Name that value
InstalledByUser (the value of the new String should be your User Account
name) > Uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs.

Some software (for example CCleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as
$NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$. If the $NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$ folder is empty, or
has been deleted completely, whether by third party software or manually to
preserve disk space, you will *not* be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via
Add/Remove Programs or the commandline. If running System Restore does not
resolve the situation for you, then your only choice is to stay with the
Preview, or format your PC and install Windows anew. You will not be able
to install any future builds of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor
will you be able to run a Repair Install of XP.

Many thanks, PA Bear. The uninstall directory is missing so it looks as if I
will have to do full reinstall of windows and all the applications. As IE7
is not working at the moment I cannot stay with it.

I had another think and installed IE7 on another PC. I then copied the
uninstall directory to my original machine and carried out the uninstall from
the command line. I now have a working IE6

Another uninstall shot in the locker.

Many thanks,
Mike
