I have been using XP Home edition and IE version 7.0.5730.13 for well
over 1 year....maybe more like 2 yrs total.

No complaints until recently.

Now it seems when I try to access websites from the Internet, that I
often get the message "IE CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE"

I don't get this message all the time, but I get it often. In the
past, I almost _NEVER_ got that message.

BTW....this message might appear when I try to access a website that I
know is functioning perfectly well.

Is there an easy fix? I say "easy" cuz I'm not very computer capable.

Thank you....... Lee in Denver

WinXP SP2 or SP3? Is the computer fully-patched at Windows Update?
Now it seems when I try to access websites from the Internet, that I

Which websites?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Those with IE7- and/or IE8-specific questions or comments can post to and
seek support in IE General newsgroup:

Thank you for your response PA BEAR. I appreciate it. I'll try real
hard to accurately answer your questions.

Win XP with SP3. I last did a Windows Update on July 29, 2009. I
_was_ having my problem prior to the last update.
Which websites?

It seems to be random. Not necessarily the same websites over and
over. I would say that NONE of the website that I have bookmarked
have escaped this problem........and it also often happens when I try
to follow a "link".

These are the "security measures" that are installed, and the
subscriptions are current. Any "updates" that this security stuff
requires, that is up to date at least until Aug 1 2009...........and
possibly more recent. Here's what I've got:

AVAST, ADAWARE, MALWAREBYTES, ONLINE ARMOR
(plus Defender I think, not sure)
Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought

I bought this Dell PC new. I'm sure that Norton was not on it.
McAfee I am not sure about, but I don't think so. If McAfee was on it
when it was new, the computer guy I paid to set this computer up for
me, he would have removed the McAfee when he installed the above
listed security stuff.

Again, thank you so much.

Is Automatic Updates enabled? If it's not, can you enable it, reboot, and
then find it still enabled?

[Note: You're missing a goodly number of critical security updates if you've
not been able to update manually since 29 Jul-09 or earlier. This alone is
NOT good news.]

Can you update Avast, Ad-Aware, MBAM (MalwareBytes Anti-Malware), and
Defender manually?

Do you see any difference if you (1) disable Online Armor and then (2)
enable the Windows Firewall? I assume both of them are not enabled right
now.

Do you know if the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool was ever run on the
computer?
