When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Windows Updates is only available for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and
newer Vista. You need to have the website placed in Trusted Sites or
it will not work. They required this well over a year ago now. You
will also be checked most likely with the Windows Genuine Advantage
tool install - checks for piracy copies of Wiindows. Could simply be
any of those but does not sound like it.

This probably will not help the OP, but I thought I might say something about
this:

Understanding the issue with discontinued support for some O/S versions,
this statement is not entirely correct.

Even though I have my own issue with IE7, I actually do general repair work
on pc's including cleaning up, and updating.

This week so far I have used Windows updates to update four HomeXPSP1
computers, 7 WinProSP1, five win2k sp3's and more than six ...windows ME...
yes...even windows ME.

That said...yes...there is no longer continued support and updates, however,
to get whatever there was to get is still able to be gotten...ah...it's too
early to worry about grammar :) Though for me and 2kpro...who knows how long
that will be.
