My desktop computer shows repeated restore points from Windows Defender
since I installed IE7. My laptop, which retains IE6, shows no such activity.
Suggests there might be a link. Also posted on
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general.

Hmm - I just posted my own restore point experience, which is that I have
none related to Windows Defender over the three days that I've got stored.
And, in fact, I am running IE7 beta2 on this system.

So--we probably need to look deeper.

Also, if I do a cold boot, the WD icon is not in the taskbar even though I
have told WD to keep it there. Once I click on a WD shortcut, it appears,
works well and stays until the next boot. This happens on both desktop and
laptop, so perhaps it's to be expected and is normal. Please advise.
Thanks Bill for the help.

I haven't tested the behavior of that icon choice. I would expect to see an
icon at all times, I think, so this sounds like a bug--I'll try it out.

OK - I've had this setting on for an evening, but not across a reboot yet.

One thing I found I needed to remember: If you really want the icon to
always be visible, you need to right-click an empty notification area space,
and choose "Customize notifications"--and set that icon to "always show"

--

Next morning, after a reboot, icon is happily visible. I recommend looking
into the "always show" setting.

I've always marked the icon as "always show" but it is never in the taskbar
after a boot-up or re-boot. At those times it is not even there when I click
to show hidden items. Odd. I've had to turn off WD on the desktop (which has
IE7 beta 2) because of the almost hourly restore points it has been
creating. The laptop and WD get on well together (with IE6). I will wait a
while to see how WD develops, keeping a close eye on the newsgroup. Thanks
for the interest and help. Neville.

I just switched my icon back to the default behavior because it has worked
consistently as advertized.

There were Icon showing related bugs in the beta1 program. What you are
seeing certainly seems like a bug (i.e. if Microsoft says the icon should
always show, it should!)--but I'm not sure how to provide a good
replication?

There is a registry hack to fix the restore points--I know I posted it last
night--not sure what group though--perhaps .general.

Thanks for that registry fix - it stops all insertions of restore points by
WD, so is there anything else I ought to do?

Here's the other thought that I had about your issue. The icon is
associated with MSASCUI.exe. By default, when the system is running, both
the background service--msmpeng.exe, and msascui.exe are both running. It
sounds as though on your system, that MSASCUI.exe is not remaining resident
when you close it down.

I think the fix I'd try for this would be a repair install--start, control
panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, change, update.

I'm not sure whether you've done that or an equivalent (remove/reinstall)
already?

No, I had not tried that, but now I have. I got a restore point afterwards,
but on reboot, that elusive icon was still not there, but responded to a
click on the shortcut! Not worth worrying about, but I would like to
understand more than I do! Best wishes.

If you hit ctrl-alt-delete, when the icon is not present, and go to the
processes tab, and then click on Image Name (click in the column
header)--that will sort the list by Image name--do you see both MpEng.exe
and MSASCui.exe listed?

--

My mistake--Defender is msmpeng.exe.

OneCare is mpeng.exe, and I'm always getting them confused.

OK. I'd say something is broken on your system, and it is good that you
have the icon set to show, because that makes it visible. I'm not sure what
the significance of it is, though.

I think I'd go for a full-blown uninstall and reinstall this time around, to
see whether that sets things up properly. I'm unclear the precise
functionality of having MSAScui.exe always running--however, but I think
that you want it running--at some future time, it may be able to warn if the
underlying service is shut down or fails for some reason.

That's done, but no difference. I believe the problem is associated with a
basic fault in my user system. As I seem to be hogging the newsgroup space,
may I contact you directly without becoming a nuisance?"Bill Sanderson MVP"
