This is a re-post from Windows XP Security and Administration; I put it on
the wrong page, well it was 05:30(ish) GMT and I was on my way to work!

Hi all,
I've just got a couple of questions about IE6.
1: Several times recently, I haven't been able to log on because IE has set
itself to never dial a connection. I re-set it to always dial the default
then apply it and after a couple of weeks it will happen again. Has anyone
any idea as to why and how to stop it. I've run a virus scan and found
nothing
2: I size the windows to fit the screen excluding the start bar at the
bottom of the screen; sometimes they re-size themselves and fill the screen,
which I find annoying. Again, how can I stop it?

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections
Highlight any there (if any) that you don't want and remove
also...

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power....or….

and... a virus scan alone is not enough to find all the various types of
sucmware that may be on your system and causing the problem. Follow the
instructions here to fully clean your system. I maybe that spyware is the
culprit, and Virus scans are not programmed to detect or remove spyware.

Window won't open maximized
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers.htm#new_window_max

How to Maximize Windows:

IE remembers the size of the last secondary window closed and uses that for
all future secondary windows...so long as you don't resize it using the
Maximize button which is a temporary setting and won't be retained. And
don't close it by using the X in the upper right corner of rhe window. You
must go to the toolbar and use the File>Exit

Hre are the steps for forcing all secondary windows to open maximized:
1. Open IE, go to a page with links
2. Open a link in a new window
3. Grab the corners/edges of the secondary window and drag it to the size
and placement you want, do not use the maximize button
4. Close the original window - important step, don't overlook it!
5. Close the window you just resized

All future IE secondary windows will open using the size and placement of
the window you closed in step 5.

and…..

Courtesy of Jim Byrd -

"Close all windows EXCEPT the one that opens "minimized"; right click on
your Task Bar, either on the open space on the right or left end (your
choice); select "Tile Windows Horizontally" and IE will maximize; close IE.
Re-open IE and it will be maximized. Just showed a buddy this trick
yesterday and works like a charm. Enjoy."

It does work like a charm, but it isn't quite a normal "maximize" just a
full screen with a border. However, it does subsequently hold that.

IE New Window Maximizer 2.4.0.1 - Free
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1746
(Uses Windows API calls and automatically maximizes every browser window you
open)

There's also AutoSizer, free, here:

or….

Courtesy of Alan Edwards -

Try stretching the small window to full size. (Do not use Maximize)
Ensure that window is the last one closed and IE should remember the
size next time.

and…….

Run the REG file at
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#IEMax
Then retry the open, stretch, close process. It may help if your first IE
window is always
"normal"- even if it fills the screen- not maximized when you close it.

or...

If no joy, snip & paste this in your Browser Window.
**No Quotes**
"javascript:window.open(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight)"

Hope this helps.

1: See
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/archive/answers2.htm#connection_change
and scroll down to
My dialup settings keep changing from 'never dial' to 'always dial' or
'always dial' to 'never dial

2: Windows remembers the size of the last Normal IE window closed.
Open such a link.
Don't use the maximize button.
Stretch the edges/corners so that the window is the size you want.
Close all other IE windows.
Close the stretched window.

If that doesn't do it try the REG file here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#IEMax

Many Thanks, to you both.
I realised after posting the windows only change size after my children have
been on the comp, and if IE6 remembers the last secondry window size, thats
that problem sorted. And the dial up problem, well, I have AdAware. Just
didn't think of it for this so I'll run it tonight.
Again thank you.

You're very welcome! Be sure to also run SpyBot and the HiJackThis, as
AdAware only detects adware. It does not have the detection tools for
spyware or other types of malware. That is why there is a variety of
detection and removal tools that are sometimes needed to fully clean all
scumware off your system. Follow the instructions for posting your
HiJackThis log to one the forums listed in the information provided by Frank
and/or I, to be sure your machine is totally clean. Some types of malware
can replicate itself repeatedly if it is not fully removed.

Hope this helps.
