G'Day All,

Each TIme IE is 'closed' the Window disappears, but Task
Manager shows that the process persists - I have to 'kill' it.

Eack time Windows Explorer closes, it generates an IE
instance with Window 'about:blank'!

If this Window is 'closed', again it persists as a process.
That process 'interferes' with folder navigation in any subsequent
instance of Windows Explorer, until I 'kill' the IE instance.

If I keep 'kill'ing IE processes all is well - except with ME!

Advice appreciated.

Hi Pat :-)
G'Day All,

There are more than a few things that can cause this problem, but, the most
likely is a virus, malware, spyware, parasites or other 3rd party warez.
Some of these variants are very hard to *kill*, and they can replicate
themselves with each new startup is not removed properly.

It is possible you have malware, spyware or parasites on your system that
can cause this problem. I addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
This is another very good site for scumware information and how to protect
your PC against these types of warez:

Here is some further information on the XP SP2 that might also help:

WinXP SP2 Support Center

Pages of MVP & 'Windows Update Maven' Jupiter Jone's
Service Pack (any) Installation Checklist

WinXP SP2-specific Page

If you have installed any software that modifies standard system components,
eg to give a different boot screen, or even custom theme, uninstall it
before installing either service pack.

Also, SP2 includes all the items in SP1, and may further update some of
them. It is not necessary to install SP1 before getting SP2; nor to
iuninstall it or any other Microsoft Windows Updates.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
