Hi All,

removing pests and thing i have got to the desktop and all applications
work.
When i click on the iexplorer the hour glass start and theit quits. I have
installed SP2, tried removing ie6 and outlook, through the registery with
now luck.
I need some help and ideas where to start?

Thanks
Melvin Edward

Hi Melvin :-)

First, IE is a core part of the XP operating system and cannot be removed.

Also, there is always a possibility of some files being damaged or corrupted
during removal of some types of spyware and malware, which may require a
repair of the IE.

However, you might first try the information below and see if it helps:

Internet Explorer Fix General purpose fix for Internet Explorer (Win
98/ME/2000/XP)

Hope this helps :-)

Hi Melvin,

I suspect there are two possibilities:

1. There are some leftovers of previous pests in OS and cause the Iexplorer
issue that when you click on the IE, the hour glass start and then quits.

2. When removing the pests from the system, some system files related
Internet Explorer are deleted.

Based on the above two possibilities, I would give the following
troubleshooting steps separately:

Aspect 1: Please perform the following steps to isolate the issue:

Step 1: Let's delete all the cookies, temporary files, downloaded objects
and plug-ins to see if it helps.
==================================
Deleting Cookies
============
1. Click Start, click Search and click For Files or Folders

2. Type "Cookies" (without the quotation marks) and click Search Now

3. Delete files in the cookie directory

Deleting Temporary Files and Downloaded Objects under C:\Documents and
Settings\[user name]\local settings\Temporary Internet Files
==================

Removing Plug-Ins in Internet Explorer
==============================
1. Close all Internet Explorer windows.

2. Open a Windows Explorer window by right Click My Computer and choose
Explore.

3. Locate the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS

4. Remove all the files in this folder.

If the problem is still exists, please follow these steps to troubleshoot
the issue:

Step 2: Refer to the following article to perform a Clean Boot
======================
310353 - How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310353

Step 3: Remove all suspicious items from the registry
===============================
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Find and delete the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browse
r Helper Objects
2. Find and delete the all the sub keys in the following registry key
(don't delete the following registry key).
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

Step 4: Clean Adware/Spyware
================================
Please download and launch at least two tools below to remove
Adware/Spyware again to make sure that there won't be any Spyware/Adware on
the system. (Please launch these tools under Safe Mode)

Ad-Aware:

Aspect 2: Based on the possibility 2, we need to reinstall Internet
Explorer 6

You have installed SP2, so you only need to reinstall SP2.

Hi Jan,

I installed the iefix, it got the iexplore icon back so i could adjust the
properties, and tell it where the connection was. It also ask if i wanted to
make the iexplore my default browser. I can ping yahoo.com with no problem.
Now if i click on the iexplore icon, i still get the hour glass and the it
just quits, but if i click on a favorite it brings up the iexplore and
startst the web page, you can see the ip address finding the site, but
before it can fill in, it disappears.
Note: I run pestpatrol spy ware and it's clean, also removed winsock and
winsock2 in the registery and reinstalled tcp\ip.

Hi Melvin :-)

Good progress for sure. Amanda has posted some very good suggestions for
you to find the underlying problem. Follow the steps she has outlined and
see if that helps. Although PestPatrol is a very good program, there can be
other types of pests or malware on the system that it may not detect.
HiJackThis is an especially good tool, so be sure to use that one and post
your log to one of the forums below to allow the experts there to evaluate
your log and advise you of any necessary steps to clean your system.
