I am attempting to install IE6 on wME with IE 5.5 and the install stops at
75% with message 'Setup is unable to install all of the components. Shutdown,
restart and try again'. This doesn't help any, and there does not seem to be
any way to uninstall the IE6 setup. HELP!

Hi Mikey :-)

Go here and follow the steps to install the IE6 on your ME. It is very easy
to create a situation called Version Soup if you are not careful how to
attempt to the upgrade. This site will give you all the details. Noel Paton

I'm also crossposting this reply to the microsoft.public.windowsme.general
where you can get additional assistance on this problem.

Hope this helps.

For the "unable to install all components" issue with WinME and IE6SP1, try
this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Mikey,

Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files
and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files
and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and
Apply).

Create a new folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup

Locate the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall. Move the
contents of this folder to the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup you
created above.

Now try installing IE6 again. If this works you can now safely delete the
folder C:\Program Files\Internet Backup and its contents. If not, copy
the files back to the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall folder
and then delete the C:\Program Files\Internet Backup folder.

Correction:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
should instead have been
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information

X-post to WinME General.

Are you installing IE6 via Windows Update?

Did you (recently) reinstall WinME? If so, why?

Did you uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME?

Are you installing IE6 via Windows Update?

Try it. And when you've got it installed and you've rebooted, return to
Windows Update for additional updates you'll need.

I followed thi tips at the top of this thread and the install went OK. My
thanx to all those that responded.

Zee, Thanks for your invaluable help! I did exactly what you said and
finally after weeks of trying other suggestions ( no thanks to microsoft) I
fixed the problem. Thank you again. Joe
