IE6 won't connect

I'm running under XP Pro (latest updates). I normally use Firefox for
Internet access (broadband via router/modem). It's working properly,
as is Outlook Express.

I've just noticed that IE6 (v. 6.0.2900) won't connect. If I type a
URL, IE just shows the hourglass and not the usual connecting bar in
the right corner. No error messages. Also, if I select a favorite, it
isn't copied into the address box. Because I don't often use IE, I
don't know when this started, but I've noticed a few posts about no
connection following a recent Windows update. I rolled back to before
the latest update, but no success.

I've checked the connection settings and cleared the cache. I tried
sfc /scannow. It asked for the SP2 CD (in the drive), but then
reported that it wanted the Pro version of the CD (even though the CD
says "for Pro"). I can't uninstall IE6 because it doesn't appear in
the Add/Remove list. I also tried clearing the Installed flag in the
registry and running ie.inf, but that didn't work either.

I've tried with and without ZoneAlarm. A full AVG scan, SpyBot and
AdAware are all clear.

XP was pre-installed, so I only have an OEM Recover CD.

Can anyone help please ?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Frank,

Thanks, tried all of your suggestions, but no success.

Any ideas why a) Favorites won't copy to the address bar and b) sfc is
asking for a "Pro" SP2 CD ? Are those clues to my problem, because I
haven't see any references to that behaviour in the forum ?

You have a system where SP2 was an upgrade. Reinstall SP2.

I've done that, but nothing has changed. IE still won't connect and
won't copy favorites into the address box. And sfc still asks for the
Profession SP2 CD.
