IE6 won't come up if application calls it up

I need someone to help me with a problem I have. I am
running XP home with IE6 SP1. I can open IE and surf
without a problem. The problem is seen when applications
such as Antivirus or spy cleaners try to update. It is as
if the application can't call up IE so it errors out and
doesn't perform it's task. The same happens when I try to
update IE to SP1a it downloads the installer and begins
the process but when it gets to the point where it needs
to download the rest of the package it errors out saying
it can't find the server.

Please help!

Seeing the complete error(s) would help. Meanwhile, rule out hijackware:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis: Post your files to the
forum mentioned on the above page. Some of these bad guys have started
blocking users access to AdAware's and other's pages! (More at
http://www.spywareinfo.net/sep16,2003)

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:

(30 Sept-03: 1.21 is the latest version. Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder
before each use.)

We've tried every spyware & virus fix we can think
of...no luck. Applications simply can't "see" the
Internet even though I'm connected. Sample error
message: "McAfee Security Center is unable to connect to
the Internet." "Connect error 10061."

Ny other ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the ideas PA Bear. But this happens with every
application (not just McAfee) that tries to access the
internet (like an atomic time check, Excel, and automatic
updates to other programs). They all fail to "see" IE6
and connect, even though I can connect just fine from
within IE6.

The McAfee app may be the *cause* of the interference/problem. Temporarily
disable it entirely.
