Duron 800, 512 RAM, 30 gigs free on HD, Win XP Pro with all security
upgrades. Was running Zonealarm Free version.

The machine is connected to an ethernet router for internet access and all
other PC's connected to the router are browseing with no problems.

The machine in question is using ie6 but the status bar finds the sites but
does not display a page. Always says website found waiting for response. No
error message produced.

The machine has

Updated Windows Media Player over the net from within Media Player with no
problem. It has updated AVG anti virus over the Internet. It also browses
with Firefox newly installed to check if it's working with no problem. It
pings all sites with no problem.

If you right click on the ie icon on the desktop it allows you to chose
properties and change items. If you try to do the same with ie6 open and
click. Tools, Internet Options it does not open the Internet Properties
control panel

In ie6 I have changed the security settings to medium.

Does anyone have any ideas

You said ZA "Was" running, how was it uninstalled? The truvector service in
older versions that is ZA's actual firewall MUST be shut down and the system
rebooted before uninstall, otherwise uninstall takes away the control bits
of the program but not the firewall... If that is what happened then it may
be "ZA" which you cannot now adjust. You will have to reinstall to regain
control or else find the registry entry that runs it and remove it manually.
ZA always was basically a good firewall, so I see no reason they would
change the situation re uninstall..

The problem was there with the latest version of the free zonealarm some
weeks ago.

Today when I found the problem, zonealarm was still installed. I uninstalled
via control panel and still the problem is there.

Still open to any ideas

Well that method did not work unless you first unchecked the "Start with
windows" option and then rebooted... IOW once the firewall was running it
was next to impossible to kill.

You maybe need to check the "Run" keys in the registry, or else reinstall,
switch off, reboot, uninstall.

Of course this may not be the problem anyway but if ZA was not prevented
from starting before the uninstall it probably is not gone :)
