IE6 vs. Norton Antivirus Crash - Help Please

Hi - I'm running WXP Pro with IE6 and OE. Through this am, everything was
cool and running fine. When I started my computer this afternoon, I got a
NortonAntivirus2003 error message that a required file was missing or
damaged: ......\ccemlpxy.dll. This has apparently also damaged my IE and OE
files - any website or email takes forever to load, and both programs are
very unstable. I'm on cable modem and networked, and my other computer
loads websites fine, so it's not my connection. I've spent hours with tech
support. Tried to uninstall NAV using conventional method as well as
special utility rnav2003.exe. Now I can't reinstall it, and IE and OE are
not a bit better. Some of the NAV files - including ccemlpxy.dll would not
uninstall. Efforts to delete them resulted in error msg: ccemlpxy.dll would
not delete due to cyclical redundancy check. The only other option that
support can offer is to reinstall WXP. I REALLY don't want to do that....
If anyone has any other suggestions, I would be forever grateful. Thanks.

If you have xp.

Type services.msc in the run box.
Look for all Norton’s & Symantec and
disable them.

Xp,98, ME
Type msconfig.exe disable anything Nortons or
Symantec. Xp & ME may complain, let it.

Reboot try uninstalling Norton’s through
add remove, if not reboot again and try it manually.

Hi PA Bear - Thanks for your response, alas, not much help there. They only
refer me to a Norton Antivirus Knowledge Base Document 1002,1 that
describes this problem. Apparently well documented. Unfortunately, none of
the uninstall options (including attempting to manually delete the
offending file) will provide me a complete uninstall. Windows will not
permit me to delete this file, due to a "cyclical redundancy check"
whatever the $%&^# that is. At this stage IE and OE performance is still in
the ditch and I cannot reinstall NAV. All other ideas appreciated.

My advice is as-is. It could trash your system.

Any number of Trojan worms and viruses can disable anti-virus applications.
Were your NAV definitions up-to-date when the problem started? Dare I ask
if your subscription is current? Norton and other providers have free
online scans, if you can get up and running long enough (Greg's post should
help).

Some sort of hijackware may be involved:

Thanks Greg - I'm running XP Pro. I'll give them both a try as soon as
latest road trip is over. PA Bear - Nav definitions are up to date. In fact
the last action before the normal shutdown prior to the problem was weekly
update of definitions and full computer scan. Nothing was found. Perhaps a
coincidence, but still suspicious. Regardless, live updates have been
conducted at least weekly since buying the computer 10 months ago, with no
known problems. Don't know if I mentioned it, but I tried two System
Restores - 2 days prior to problem and 5 days prior to problem, with no
help. I haven't tried paid support direct from Symantec. I'll probably give
it a shot, but not optimistic. Any other thoughts appreciated.
