IE6 Toolbar position resets each time it is closed

G

Gary Thweatt

I have a home built PC with XP Pro fully updated. Antivirus
up-to-date, Ad-aware and Spybot are clean and ZoneAlarm and router
firewalls are in place.

I noticed recently that my Google Toolbar wasn't holding position in
newly opened IE windows. I'd move it to where i wanted it and close
IE then reopen (w/o reboot) and it had again moved to it's own row
left-justified.

I checked and an update (from 2.0.95 to 2.0.106) for the toolbar was
available. I updated it.

This actually made the problem worse as now all toolbars revert to
there default positions each time i close IE.

Default is defined as what IE gives you at installation, plus Google:

| Menu |
| Standard Buttons |
| Address Bar |Links |
| Google |

when my preferred, and normal layout until the Google started left
justifying, is:

| Menu | Address |
| Standard Buttons | Google |
| Links |

Locking the bars has no impact as they revert to the default position
in the locked state.

I've tried removing Registry Keys
([HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar])
without impact on the problem.

I completely uninstalled Google Toolbar which had no impact.

Windows Explorer toolbar remembers its settings just fine

I want the IE toolbars to remember there positions.

Any help, insight or ideas you could give would be appreciated.

I should have mentioned i'd already found that page and the solutions
either didn't apply (sine it isn't an HP/Compaq) or didn't solve the
problem.

I deleted the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar] key. Subsequent resetting the toolbars to my
preferred positions lasted only until i closed the IE window. The
next IE window i opened had the toolbars reset to the default
positions.

I had tried this previously but tried again using this file to delete
ITBarLayout.

I closed all IE windows, applied .reg file, rebooted, applied .reg
file, rebooted again then tried to open an IE window. Toobars were in
default positions. I moved the toolbars to preferred positions and
closed the IE window and re-opened IE. Toolbars were again in the
default position.

I've also deleted the entire structure below
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar] with
the same result in IE.

Either my toolbar position changes are not being saved to ITBarLayout
when it is recreated or something outside this key is impacting the
toolbar placement.

Gary,

Try disabling all third-party browser extensions and perform a clean-boot [to test the operation]. Similar to AutoTKit, there might be some application causeing this.

Curious. Disabled the extensions (WinZip I'net Browser Add-on,
Acrobat Viewer 5) and uninstalled Google Toolbar then disabled all
startup programs. After a reboot the toolbars would remain where i
moved them.

I re-enabled startup programs a few at a time without incident. Then
i added the Google Toolbar back and while standard IE toolbars would
remember their places the Google Bar wouldn't.

I cleared the ITBarLayout key out of curiousity and then no toolbars
would remember their place.

Uninstalled Google, disabled all startup progs again, rebooted.
Toolbars stayed where i wanted them. Installed Google THEN re-enabled
all startups, then re-enabled all extensions.

Toolbars holding their places. I'm holding my breath for now.

Thanks for your help.
