Ever since loading SP2, I have been unable to access various non-secure
websites (MSN, Microsoft, Hotmail, Google, Hotmail, McAfee, etc.), but I can
access non-computer related sites just fine. I can access these sites if I
enter the IP address instead of the URL and I can access them using the URL
if I'm running XP in Safe Mode. I've been working with Microsoft Support but
we haven't been able to reslove the problem. We have tried just about
everything -- flushing the DNS cache, reregistering certain dll files,
disabling the add-ons, etc., etc. etc. It doesn't appear to be caused adware
or a virus either. All my definitions are up-to-date and scans don't return
any results. I was hoping that someone here might have run across this and
could help. I really don't want to have to uninstall SP2 for fear of making
a bad situation worse.

Thanks,
Robie

Hi,
The fact that Safe Mode fixes the problem points to another program as the
cause, right? Have you tried disabling any program that could *possibly* be
causing this?

Have you run CWShredder and Ad-awareSE and Spybot?

Do you occassionally shut *everything* down- computer(s), modem, router,
etc?

You might try: WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Another possibility... go to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work
through steps 1-7, then post a
HijackThis log for analysis (step 8.)

Also, there might be something that will help at
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns

Hope this helps,
Don

Thank you for your advice. I spoke with Microsoft again last night and we
were able to pinpoint the problem. You are right! It turned out to be a
software conflict. I was running a program called GhostSurf in order to beef
up my online privacy. It redirects my Internet browsing through alternate
hubs. For some reason, after installing SP2 it started blocking URL access
to certain websites. I disabled the program and now everything is working
fine.

Thanks for your help.
