OS: Windows 2000 server SP4
IE 5.?
Server-type: Mail-,file-,print-,app-server

Recently I needed to update a 3d party mailscanner. The new version however
needed .Net framework 1.1. So I visit windows update. However to install .Net
framework I also needed to upgrade IE. So windows update scanned the computer
and listed all the updates. I selected both and finished the installation.
Therefore I had to restart the server.
After the reboot I had the following problems:
-Internet explorer won't start
I see the IE screen but no page is diplayed. I don't even get the "page can
not be
displayed" notification.
If I try to acces the internet connection settings I get no respons. And I
can't shut down IE the normal way.

My first reaction was to cancel the installation of IE by repairing the
installation to the old configuration. It's an option I had in Add/remove
programs IE6 SP1

Doing that had the following result:
IE still won't start (nothing new)
I also can't open the control panel ! I get a black screen and after half an
hour I finally get the list. So it got really slowly.

The other services are not affected however, they still work as fast usual.

Is there a way to remove the updates?
Or another solution to make it work?
Perhaps a solution to get around?

Thank you very much specialists

With a lot of patience I finally did get in the control panel ! In of
add/remove programs I can see IE 6 SP1 and I have 2 options:
Repair internet explorer & restore the previous windows configuration.

I already tried the first one so now there's no alternative left but to
restore the previous windows configuration. However I'm not sure it's a good
idea. I doubt it will be succesfull and I can't have a downtime of the
server. Does anyone have experience in this restore matter?

In case it does work is there another way to get to IE6 SP1?

Thanks again.

Did you have an antivirus running during the install of SP1? If so, Restore
previous Windows Configuration and make sure the anti-virus is off during
the install of SP1. After installing go back to Windows Update. There have
been a lot of critical updates since SP1.

Yes I did have McAfee running uring the installation. I'll follow your
instructions when I do the installation over. Thanks a lot Frank I'll keep
you informed.

I didn't get that far unfortunatly. Windows blocks me from add/remove
programs. The system doesn't respond to my request.
Is there a way around this?

Yesterday I tried again on a moment the server was practically unloaded
(everyone was at home) and with a lot of patience he did respond.
I succeeded to choose "Restore previous Windows Configuration" everything
went fine, after that it asked to reboot.

After the reboot Internet explorer still didn't work.
I'm out of options I need a working internet explorer to download the latest
updates of Antivirus.

Suggestions are welcome

Thank you Mr. Saunders. If you're still there.
I noticed that after the Restore previous Windows Configuration my backup
program veritas backup exec 9.1 didn't respond anymore. I suppose it has
something in common with IE.
I also ran an winsockfix tool from softpedia. Bad luck again did hep me any
further.

Suggestions?
