Running WinXP with IE6.0.

When I go to web sites, click on active links, or go to a different web
page, my IE suddenly shuts my pc down. This only happens on occasions, and
is random and intermittent. There is no pattern to the problem, such as
certain web sites, etc.

Any ideas what the cause might be or how to fix?

This can be the recipe for disaster, is your Computer clean from malwares
and viruses, do you have an Up2date Anti-virus installed on your PC and Scan
on regularly.
If your answer yes then your HDD drive may have a problem or your System is
Overheated!.
Try and look in your Event Viewer for any Error Messages indicating or
pointing to a specific program/Hardware causing a problem or Error message
and send them here.
Try disk clean Up, Deferag, and chkdsk.exe or For XP SP2 type in the Run
command this : sfc /scannow and let it run also get your XP CD handy to put
it in if needed.

Thanks for the info. Where do I find my event viewer?

I wondered about a corrupted or missing file in IE6. I have my original pc
CD. Could I uninstall and reinstall IE6?

I have good a/v and run Spybot and AdAware frequently. I also use Error
Clean and CW Shredder.

My problem started up approximately 3 mos ago, so overheating probably isn't
the cause, as it was fine prior to that.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose default
install is loaded with malware. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along.
