With apologies for the OT post, but this is the only ng where people are
clever enough and obliging!

I need to upgrade to IE6 in order to run some new accounting software
(Quickbooks).

Normally I use Avant or Firefox.

However, the ie6 setup never ever completes no matter often I've tried.
I'm on a Dell laptop with
ME.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. Do I still need to do this as I have 5.5 installed?

I'm assuming you've tried -- and failed -- to go to Windows Update and
download and install the Critical Update for IE/OEsp1. This is the best
alternative I can think of to get around that difficulty. I hope you're
on a fast connection; otherwise, it's gonna be a long download. I got
the .exe a long time ago and have it archived. Whenever I'm doing an
upgrade or install, I run it from a CD. Much faster. Another alternative
would be to get your hands on a Windows Security Update CD.

Do you need it? Well, you say you do to use the new version of
Quickbooks. Personally, I would recommend it, regardless. Too many
security holes in IE5x.

Cheers Mark, downloading as we speak. About twenty minutes on the broadband.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Welcome. Again, make sure you run Windows Update afterwards to bring it
up to date. There will be several Critical Updates involved -- get 'em
all.

Yep, and you have the original IE 5.5 SP1, right?

It's a bug. IE 6 will not install over IE 5.5 SP1.

Download IE 6 if you haven't already. Then, download IEradicator from
http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html. Eradicate IE 5.5 from the system,
and then install IE 6.

Be sure to save your Favorites folder somewhere first. Then just recopy it
back to the Windows directory after the install is complete.

Fantastic. I'll do that tomorrow (back at work)..

Many thanks.
