A pop-up window resulted in a number of icons being added
to my desktop. I ran a deep scan with Ad-aware and
detected a number of new files, including a browser
hijacker. I removed all the files, but I believe I may
have accidentally deleted a file I need. I have Internet
Explorer 6 browser settings properly set up to search
from the address line. However, if I type the word
Olympics on the address line and press Enter, it fails
with "The page cannot be displayed" and
http:///? Olympics
is displayed in the address line. Can anyone tell me how
to correct this?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

If I type just "olympics" mine fails too. Try typing with prefix www,
alternatively Google search.

I am Having same trouble and posted in MS xp Help and support group but no
answers yet .

Len, if I wanted to go to a web site by name, Olympics +
Ctlr + Enter would take me to http://www.olympics.com (if
the site existed). So, Google search wasn't an
appropriate response. What I was referring to was a
search for sites containing the word Olympics. Clicking
the search button on the taskbar and entering the search
value in the search box that wil be displayed works.
That allows me to use the search engine I selected in
Customize Search Settings. But, search from the address
line should work, too and it is quicker... if it worked.
If anyone can provide help, I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

I apologise for misunderstanding. Have tried this (new to me) functionality
with excellent results. I've also determined the search rules used by/for
this routine, by user-testing.

Google can find no site which has "OLYMPICS" as the COMPLETE name of a
website.
Nor can the Ctrl/Enter routine (your post).

My bank is Lloydstsb (site is http://www.lloydstsb.com). Typing just
"lloyds" (and refusing offered existing dropdown links) +Ctrl/Enter results
in searchline changing to www.lloyds.com, then "page cannot be displayed".
Also tried other words, where I have no pre-existing links ("vauxhall" for
example). It only works when the sitename matches exactly.

The search logic/rule is - Search-word MUST EXACTLY match the sitename IN
FULL for this function to work. Perhaps I'm wrong, but the several tests
I've done supports this assertion.

If you care to try ("vauxhall" should pull up their site) and it works, then
the complete answer to your original post is - There is no problem with the
function, but it needs the full site textname in order to work. It is a pure
search-engine, speedy because it does NOT search for alternatives if no
match found.

I agree with you, it's VERY quick, when it does ! Thanks for adding this
function to my knowledge.
Sincerely, LEN

Len, Ctrl+Enter fills in //www. in front of and .com
behind whatever you type. Typing msn and pressing
Ctrl+Enter will fill in //www.msn.com in the address line
and take you to that site. It's just a shortcut to
typing a URL and going to the site. That isn't what I am
talking about. I'm talking about an address line web
search for a text value I specify, not for a site that
contains the text value somewhere within the
URL. "Olympics" is meerly the example I used for a web
text search. I am not trying to go to //www.olympics.com
especially since there is no such site. In my example, I
would be searching for sites that include a reference to
Olympics, NOT a site that contains Olympics in the URL.
Hope this clears it up.

Have you checked your Search settings yet? With IE open, click on the
Search icon. There should be a "customize" link towards the top of the
search column. In that screen is an AutoSearch button where you select the
search provider for address bar searches.

In Internet Options> Advanced> AutoSearch, make sure "do not search from
address bar" is not selected. Choose one of the other options instead.

Some of the anti-spyware programs have settings related to search as well.
If these are locked to protect your search settings, you'll need to unlock
them to reset your preferences. Then, if you'd like, lock them again to
protect them from being hijacked.

Sharon, thanks. But my Internet Explorer settings are
correct. I have exhausted all trouble shooting
procedures. What I need now is Microsoft InterNet
Explorer Technical Support, but I'm not holding my breath
waiting for that to happen. Hopefully, SP2 will fix
it.

Oxy, thank you very much for the assist. The information
you gave me fixed my problem. On a diffferent issue, I
just noticed I have a beta version of MSN Search. It
seems to work OK though. Oh well. It's always
something. Anyway, thanks again. I really appreciated
the help.
