On a Windows XP system (SP1, all critical fixes applied) with IE6 SP1, all
of the following bizarre things happen:
(1) When IE is launched, it *doesn't* begin with the configured STart page.
When I unplug the cable and launch, there appears to be an endless attempt
by something to type and launch its's own web site
(2) So, when I tried to access the Internet settings via either
Tools>Internet Options inside IE or from Control Panel, the General tab and
a few other tabs are missing.
After lots of research, I discovered registry keys that, if set, can disable
selected tabs from the options panel. These keys are in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Policy\Internet Explorer. When I use regedit to
look for these keys, they aren't there.
WHile looking at the IE keys in the registry, I found that, for the user in
question, both the StartPage and SearchPage keys have StartPage_bak and
SearchPage_bak, and it's the web site listed here that IE is attempting to
launch.
And clues? Where can I find a list of IE related registry keys?
Thanks
