IE6 Page Cannot be displayed while connection is OK

I have Win XP SP2. All a sudden the IE cannot open any website, while my
connection is OK (can receive gmail thru outlook express and can update virus
definition). I have tried to restore, reformat hard drive, use winsock fix,
and went thru the step suggested by Microsoft online support, still no luck.
I also tried turn off Windows firewall. No luck at all. I installed Mozilla
Firefox and page cannot be opened either. I'm desperate now. Any suggestions
and ideas?

Please HELP! Many Thanks.

Check your DNS settings, it's possibly related to your ISP DNS servers not
responding in time to the addresses you're trying to use in the browser. Try
stopping the DNS Client service (set it to manual or disabled), this will
disable caching of DNS responses but will normally help with intermittent
ISP DNS issues as it prevents the caching of the "not found" responses too.

There scroll down under the Browsing Option and uncheck this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third Party browser Extensions (Req Res)
Click Apply then [OK] to close the IE Pro Window.

2= Do you have any other toolbar installed on your browser?.
Try uninstall/Repair for IE6 fromControl panel >> Add/Remove Programs and
see if that will help or open a Run command and type this (one at a time):
regsvr32 /i mshtml click [OK]
iexplore /rereg click [OK] and wait for it to finish.
also try to repair the winsock by excuting this Run command:
RUN >> netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Reboot your Machine and try the Internet and see if the issue will reproduce

I have loaded the Firefox browser and get the same problem there! I also have
a laptop which uses the same broadband connection as the desktop and it has
the same problem.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the problem must lie either with my router
or broadband connection. ISP claims broadband is OK!

Like you I tried all suggestions and no difference. However, I have a Desktop
and Laptop using the same broadband connection and both have same symptoms. I
took the laptop to a friends house tonight and had no problems at all. I
guess I have a bad connection either in the internal wiring or the house or
at the exchange. Alternatively it could be a bad filter.

That is the job for tomorrow.......sort it out!

It looks like your wireless connections are using a static ip address. If
your default gateway is 192.168.2.1 your computer
ip address should be from 192.168.2.101 to 192.168.2.255. Check your TCP/IP
settings and make sure you are not set up with static IP.
If you have dsl and have static ip addresses change your computer address
for your wireless card to
(192.168.0.105) or in your case (192.168.2.105) and the other to
(192.168.0.106) or in your case (192.168.2.106) you can use static ip for
them both if you want to.
Go into connection properties and check your settings make sure you have the
automatically detect
settings box checked in the lan settings window in internet options.
The easiest way is to let your computer configure your settings.
Check your router settings make sure the wireless is set to internet and not
LAN.
If you know how to access your router, check your router settings and make
sure DHCP is enabled and NAT is turned on if you have that option.

= Also do you have Internet Connection Sharing On (ICS), it does looks like
it and you did set your Wireless Network Card for it on the Connection
Properties >> Advanced.

Are you connecting to the internet via a router? In the past I've had issues
with my Netgear DG834 appearing to run out of memory for the cache on it's
DNS proxy, and I ended up disabling it and setting it to forward my ISPs DNS
IP addresses to my PC instead. Since doing that, and disabling the DNS
client service, I rarely get DNS problems - if I do, it's because both of my
ISP's DNS servers are having problems resolving, and there's little that can
be done to workaround that unless you happen to know addresses for publicly
accessible recursive DNS servers (and there aren't many of those around as
it's a potential security hole and resource drain to the servers running
them).

I have just run Windows Network diagnostics and found that I had a failure
under "Network Adaptors" and the part that failed was
"DNSServerSearchOrder"

Windows is switching from primary to secondary DNS, or vice versa, and still
not getting a response. It could be a DNS problem, or a connection problem.
It tried to ping some sites and they timed out.

You need to find an address that will respond to pings when you're connected
(many don't due to firewalls, so cannot be relied upon for testing when
things are going wrong). Once you've got one - say your ISP upstream router,
which you can find by running a traceroute - make a note of it, and next
time you get a problem ping that same address; if you get a response then
your connection is up and it's a DNS issue that is preventing you accessing
sites via IE, if you get no reponse it could be a connection issue (assuming
that the IP you're pinging hasn't gone down itself, or there isn't a routing
issue somewhere between your ISP and that IP).

To get your ISP's upstream router address, try this from a command prompt:

tracert www.microsoft.com

You should get a list of hostnames or IP addresses along with their response
times. The first host/IP on the list will likely be your router (if you have
one, if you don't it should be your ISP upstream router), so make a note of
the second one. Ping it - if you get a response, keep a note of the IP
address that Ping says it's hitting. Next time you get a problem, ping that
address and see if you get a response. Also run the tracert again (so long
as your PC has cached the address for www.microsoft.com then it will work),
and see if you get a different result - it may point to where the problem
is, such as a failure at an ISP router that prevents your PC from accessing
their DNS servers for resolution.
