IE6/Outlook 2003

When clicking an email address on a page in Internet Explorer the normal
function is to open an Outlook email.

Instead about 70 IE pages open and the the following error appears "Could
not perform this operation because the default mail client is not installed"

Settings are correct in Internet connections --programs.
It appears to be a registry issue but no knowledge base docs have helped.
Oulook and Explorer have been removed and reinstalled.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function

All bots, etc... have been removed previously. SP2 will not install either,
that's why I'm thinking reload......

I have already used all the apps recommended.

SP2 errors out by saying the installation can not complete. The option to
uninstall returns the OS to it previous state.
