IE6 opening extra windows since update

I'm using WinXP Pro SP2.
Ever since the latest round of updates (including the final push for the
Flash object workaround) my Internet Explorer exhibits the following
behaviour:
- when an url is typed directly in the address bar, the website is opened in
a new window, rather than just the current one, and
- a link with the target "_blank", opens two windows, one unused (no
address, no nothing), the other one just the regular page linked to.

A similar problem occurred on two other updates, except for one difference:
the two previous updates would keep opening new windows when clicking any
link, or typing any address. I fixed this last time by just removing the
update.
I'm mentioning this because (I think) these were also updates for the Flash
object workaround.

I'm assuming there's a quirk with some program or setting on my computer,
but I have no clue where to look for it.

Any ideas?

Hi Menno,
Try this, Right Click your IE icon on your desktop and select Properties
from the Sub-Menu and on the new window click on Advanced Tab.
Scroll down to Browsing Option:
[ ] Reuse Windows for launching a shortcut select this option.
Click apply to confirm your settings.
Be aware that some website <html> code is written to launch in a new window
not the main window.
Hope this helps
Please write back and let us know.

Dear Nass,

I changed the setting you suggested, and, surprisingly, crashed my Internet
Explorer. As for the html code written to launch pages into new windows; I'm
actually a full-time web developer. Ironically it turns out that indirectly
caused the problem: Don Varnau's suggestion actually fixed my problem.

Thanks,

Menno

Hi,
In addition to good tips from Nass, do you have this registry key?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{c90250f3-4d7d-4991-9b69-a5c5bc1c2ae6}
Reference: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/12/16/504864.aspx
You should not have this key with IE6.

If you have this key, export it (backup- just in case) and delete it.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi,
I'm glad that worked and [belated] credit to MVP Ramesh Srinivasan for
researching that issue.
