Am able to access yahoo etc only by using ip address. Cannot access by URL.
Links from yahoo do not open. Thoughts ?

Hi gordinian :-)

You don't mention the version of WIndows you are using, so I can only make a
guess, but, try the following and see if it helps:

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined there:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You

also....

Zone: Error Message or Nothing Happens When You Click a Web Link

Hope this helps.

Many thanks JanI!,

Tryed to register urimon.dll - Response "Loadlibrary (urimon.dll) failed.
The specified module could not be found". Was able to register all of the
others. Still not opening with URL. Incidentally - only text version loads
(no pictures) Am using XP Pro. Have not had time to venture into deeper
waters as per your kind advice.

Be sure you typed urlman (URLMON) not urimon. Cut and paste the

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

into the window and see if it still fails.

For the no images side of things -

Cannot see web images or pictures

First - Do you have an accelerator supplied by your ISP? If so, try turning
it off.
It works by reducing image size (and therefor quality) for downloads.

Try clearing the IE cache. IE>Tools>Options>General>Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

Zone Alarm Pro can block Images in IE

1. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>reset custom
level to Medium or Low
2. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>set the slider to Medium or Low
3. Go to this site and read on adjusting the Privacy settings in ZA. It will
explain how to customize on a per site basis.

Uncheck "remove private headers" for all sites.

If you have Norton Personal Firewall, other ad-blocking software or

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster, make sure the Flash Killer (under Tools)

Hope this helps.

Dear JanIl,

Thanks again- did register the correct dll this time - still not opening
without using isp.

Your other suggstions are mostly inappplicable for me. Did try those that
apply.

Think I have no alternative but to re-install system?

Hi gordinian :-)
Dear JanIl,

Thanks again- did register the correct dll this time - still not opening
without using isp.

Your other suggstions are mostly inappplicable for me. Did try those that
apply.

Think I have no alternative but to re-install system?

First, try clearing your Temporary Internet Files:

Clearing the TIF Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
or.
How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260897
Delete view off-line files not the pages File, Save as.

If TIF is much larger than 50 MB, IE starts to slow down because it's
actually faster to get the information from the Internet than to find it in
TIF. In addition, you start losing the ability to save pictures as anything
but a BMP and you lose the ability to View | Source. Unfortunately, as far
as I know IE still by default grabs some percentage of the drive for TIF and
for large drives this is way too much. 50 MB seems to be about the best.

Then disable your firewall and lower your Internet Zone security to medium
to see if that might help. If you have any 3rd party programs or toolbars
installed such as Google or Yahoo toolbar, disable them. If you have Yahoo
Companion uninstall it completely. Disable your AV and see if that is
blocking access.

Check your system for spyware or malware. That can cause this type of
problem.

If you have done all the above and still have no access, then your best bet
would be to do a Repair/Reinstall of the IE. There may be a file that has
become corrupted and needs to be replaced.

Dear Jan1,

Many thanks for all your help. Could not find time to get to grips with my
Compaq until returning from trip yesterday. Bought a newer version of XP and
did update install today. Now able to connect with web etc

Do hope I don't have to bother you again. Can I assign you 5 points?
