IE6 no longer saving email passwd

It seems that for about a week IE is no longer keeping my password when I
log on to Hotmail.
It is set to remember the signon id & pswd. The id stays, the circle is
checked (green dot),
yet what I log off the computer it seems to remove the pswd.

It seems to keep all my other logon info to other sites (cookies). I have
tried clearing temp Inet files, &
deleted cookies. The problem still persists. I could just check rem. id only
and keep retyping the pswd.
but since I am the only one ot use this pc why should I?

That plus it seems to think everytime I open IE there is a popup. Popup
controls are set to low.
For now I turned it off. I never saw any site listed in the tab.

Could this have something to do w/MS latest IE6 sec. patch? Seems that this
is when it started,
after this weeks patch. PC is set to automaticaly get updates.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

TIA

Hi Larry,
A= First try this and see if it will help:
Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Networking and
Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
click on Content Tab, then on [ Autocomplete..] Button.
There check this box under Use AutoComplete for:
[ √ ] User names and passwords on forms
[ √ ] Prompt me to save passwords
Also clear both your forms and Passwords by clicking on these Buttons:
Clear AutoComplete History--
[ Clear Forms ] [Clear Passwords .]

Click [OK] and close the IE Properties Windows and Reboot then see if you
will get the save password dialog box and then Reboot again after doing your
normal internet surf for the passwords for your access to take affect.

If still no joy try this:
B = Please back up the Registry Key First before doing any changes to it to
do that follow this:
1- Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Run Open box, type regedit.exe and then click [OK].
Locate these Keys:

[-] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Mail and News = see what
settings there and if your password for that Account been set there.
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Passport= see your account if there is a password been set there.

[-] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider =
On the File menu, click Export to export to your My Documents say for Example
and in the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the .reg
file.
Type a file name in the File name box ( say Protectedstorage), and then
click Save.
On the File menu, click Exit.

2-Then Click Start>> Run. Type in: regedit.exe Click [OK] or Hit [Enter] and
navigate
Navigate to this KEY you must be logged as Adminstrator or a member has the
same Privileges as Admin to do that:
[-] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
Right-click the Protected Storage System Provider key, and from the menu
choose Permissions.
In the Security window, press the Advanced button
With the Permissions tab selected, place a check mark in the check box
titled: "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown
here that apply to child objects".
Click Apply, and then click Yes on the Security warning dialog box
In the Name column, ensure that the user currently logged on has Full
Control access. Click OK. The following message appears:

Do you want to replace the permission on all existing subkeys within
Protected Storage System Provider?

Click Yes
Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key,
click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage
System Provider key, click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes in the
warning message dialog box

The user subkey folder looks similar to the following example:
S-1-5-21-789332378-2025424655-1Blah-blah-1003

Note: For every identity/Account that you have on this machine, there may be
a subkey created under the Protected Storage System Provider key for that
User(s). To resolve this issue in all of your identities, you must delete all
of the user subkeys folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key.
Close the registry editor
Log restart Windows for the changes to take effect
The next time you start your Internet Access or E-mail program, enter the
password when prompted and select Remember Password. This should now be
retained.
Please perform one step (A,B) one at a time and Reboot your Machine.
HTH.
Please let us know your progress.

Hi Nass, Thanks for all the feedback.
What I did do so far was your 1st suggestion. I went into the Inet Options
tab. No luck. The password stayed for the reboot, but after closing/opening
IE again it was gone. Also for some off reason after I cleared the password
setting only a couple of my passwords were gone and needed to be reentered.
Odd thng is though that is is Only MSN Hotmail's pswd that keeps getting
removed.
Right now tweaking the registry is something I am not confidant in.
I understand *how* to do it. I just need to read up on creating the b/u 1st.
Plus it seems I have to maully look
for each setting. I copy the key you show and after opening regedit I do ctl
V (paste), it searches and then comes back w/nothing.
Doing a copy/paste I doubt I entered something wrong. I tried with & w/o the
[ - ].

I Did forget to mention I am using Xp Pro. Sp2 (if that matters), b/c my
system looks a bit diff. from what you described.
I did find the options easy enough though.

When I did look in the registry I could not find [-]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Mail and News
under
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Passport I see 3 lines: (Default) REG_Sz, NumRegistrationRuns
RED_DWORD 0x000000001 (1) & RegistrationCompleted (same info.)

Under Protected Storage I am not sure what you are suggesting to do? I see
the Keyname and then another tab (subfolder) w/a long string next to it.
Rtclicking on ea. gives me 2 diff. sets of Permissions. Under the top (main
key?) I see 4 lines.
1st says Allow - Your (PC Name)\HpAdmin Full Control Current_User This key &
subkeys
2nd Allow SYSTEM .....
3rd Allow Administrator (Your PC) ....
4th Allow RESTRICTED .....

Under the 2nd (subkey) says Default REG_SZ (value not set). As you suggest
Replace permissions is NOT cked. But I am real confused her about this whole
section. My subkey already looks as you described.

I am real confused here. Why only this 1 passwd? Thanks again.

Nass.. I really think this is a secret plot by MS to make me install IE7<g>.
It tried loading it last wk. As soon as I saw IE7 I hit cancel. Anyway I
have no idea why I don't see IE on Add/Remove. I tried your other Run
option. Nothing seemed to happen.

I reentered the pswd and rebooted. It worked for a couple of times. Then I
went to AOL for a bit. When I exited I tried IE again. No pswd. I have
Zonealarm and it says no virus or spyway. Also Seek&Destroy, Trendmicro
Anti-Spyware & AdAware all come up clean.

Since I don't know for sure when this started doing a checkpoint restore
wouldn't work. Programs & Updates were installed in the last few days.
Unfort. I have no disc as OS was preinstalled by HP. And going back to them
they'd say do a restore to factory settings. Not going ot do that. It's not
that big a prob. For now I'll just tell it rem. my email addr. I can live
w/entering the passwd. No idea why, but I'll chalk it up to a MS update
cauing probs. Or is that unthinkable<g>.

Any other ideas or just live w/it? Thanks again.

Hi Larry,
Leave the Registry Option alone as is and try the IE Repair option or try
System Restore to an Earlier date before that happend.
But first are you sure your Computer is clean from malwares and Viruses,
scan for them.
To Repair IE one of two from the Control panel then Add/Remove Programs or
from a command prompt by Open Run and type in the text box:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll.IE6Maintenance click [OK] and when you got the
window asking to install a component or Repair select repair then Reboot.

If still no joy and your system clean from malwares, viruses and the Repair
didn't help try the command sfc /scannow it will fix any
damaged/corrupted
files/folders and get your XP CD handy it may ask you to insert it in.
HTH.
Let us know.
Regards,
nass

Hi nass
Well again batting a big 0.
I tried 1st the run option. Got back msg. Err loading setupwbv.dll module
not found.
Rebooted b/c system was choking. Then went line by line to rereg the dll's.
Initpki took the longest time (maybe 1/2 min. or so)
then on cryptsvc.dll I got msg: dll loaded but dllregserver entry point not
found. Not registered.
Why did you suggest reseting the winsock?

Now again after reboot the passwd held for a couple of retries of the
browser.
I went out for a couple hrs and came back to the same prob. Passwd gone.
Any other ideas, or do I just enter the silly pswd?

Hi Larry,
No,Simply because it is all MS products either it was IE6 or IE7 but MS
offer the Updates according to General statistics as a whole not on
individsuals.
Some update can be not good for some and can be life safer for others.
If your system wasn't compatible in either case Software, hardware from
other
Vendors rather than MS or MS (I'm not defending MS here) can cause trouble
and no body can discover them or with difficulty can be discovred.
For your Issue, because you hault the Installation of the Updates that was
a
bad move for your unfortunately.
= Try this and see if it will solve your issue:
Open a run command and type or cut & paste this to your Run command:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
And select Repair Option from the Open window.

= Or you can Reregister these DLLs it may will help;
Open Run Command and type thiese DLLs one-by-one:
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
netsh winsock reset

= Another to try is Double click My Computer and Right Click your Primary
Partition (C:\) and select Properties from the drop down list.
On the System window click on Tools Tab and click on Scan Disk or check
Disk
Button you will have a windows slect fix Automatically and Thoroughly or
both boxes then click [OK] you will get a Message say It can't Check the
disk
now because it is in use by other programs or something like that and you
will get the option to check on Start up say Yes/Okay for that and Reboot
your System.

Hi Larry,
Leave the Registry Option alone as is and try the IE Repair option or
try
System Restore to an Earlier date before that happend.
But first are you sure your Computer is clean from malwares and
Viruses,
scan for them.
To Repair IE one of two from the Control panel then Add/Remove Programs
or
from a command prompt by Open Run and type in the text box:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll.IE6Maintenance click [OK] and when you got the
window asking to install a component or Repair select repair then
Reboot.

If still no joy and your system clean from malwares, viruses and the
Repair
didn't help try the command sfc /scannow it will fix any
damaged/corrupted
files/folders and get your XP CD handy it may ask you to insert it in.
HTH.
Let us know.
Regards,
nass

nass, I have turned off the IE7 update. I did that maybe a wk or so ago.
Right after that thought I think is when I saw the pswd issue pop up. I ran
the sfc and again the prob. went away for a couple of browser restarts. Then
poof pswd gone again.
IF I can track down an XP disc you suggest runng the sfc /scannow w/it
loaded as well?

I mean if I put the disc it isn't it going to try and load? If I cance it
what happenes then, will I run the sfc from that drive?

Hi larry,
I was suggesting the winsock, because you interrupt the installtion that
can
result in the winsock be broken/damaged or corrupt, so you can try the
winsock repair if you didn't already.
I'm realy bulling teeth at this, but if you don't like to install IE7 yet,
you can uncheck it from the updates and install the rest of the security
updates to your computer and see if that will correct the problem.
Rather than that, what you can try is borrow a friend XP CD if you don't
have one and run the command sfc /scannow to repair any damaged files
/folder on the system.

Initpki took the longest time (maybe 1/2 min. or so)

Why did you suggest reseting the winsock?

Nass.. I really think this is a secret plot by MS to make me install
IE7<g>.
It tried loading it last wk. As soon as I saw IE7 I hit cancel. Anyway
I
have no idea why I don't see IE on Add/Remove. I tried your other Run
option. Nothing seemed to happen.

I reentered the pswd and rebooted. It worked for a couple of times.
Then
I
went to AOL for a bit. When I exited I tried IE again. No pswd. I have
Zonealarm and it says no virus or spyway. Also Seek&Destroy,
Trendmicro
Anti-Spyware & AdAware all come up clean.

Since I don't know for sure when this started doing a checkpoint
restore
wouldn't work. Programs & Updates were installed in the last few days.
Unfort. I have no disc as OS was preinstalled by HP. And going back to
them
they'd say do a restore to factory settings. Not going ot do that.
It's
not
that big a prob. For now I'll just tell it rem. my email addr. I can
live
w/entering the passwd. No idea why, but I'll chalk it up to a MS

Any other ideas or just live w/it? Thanks again.

Hi Nass, Thanks for all the feedback.
What I did do so far was your 1st suggestion. I went into the Inet
Options
tab. No luck. The password stayed for the reboot, but after
closing/opening
IE again it was gone. Also for some off reason after I cleared the
password
setting only a couple of my passwords were gone and needed to be
reentered.
Odd thng is though that is is Only MSN Hotmail's pswd that keeps
getting
removed.
Right now tweaking the registry is something I am not confidant in.
I understand *how* to do it. I just need to read up on creating the
b/u
1st.
Plus it seems I have to maully look
for each setting. I copy the key you show and after opening regedit
I
do
ctl
V (paste), it searches and then comes back w/nothing.
Doing a copy/paste I doubt I entered something wrong. I tried with
&
w/o
the
[ - ].

I Did forget to mention I am using Xp Pro. Sp2 (if that matters),
b/c
my
system looks a bit diff. from what you described.
I did find the options easy enough though.

When I did look in the registry I could not find [-]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Mail and News
under
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Passport I see 3 lines: (Default) REG_Sz,
NumRegistrationRuns
RED_DWORD 0x000000001 (1) & RegistrationCompleted (same info.)

Under Protected Storage I am not sure what you are suggesting to
do? I
see
the Keyname and then another tab (subfolder) w/a long string next
to
it.
Rtclicking on ea. gives me 2 diff. sets of Permissions. Under the
top
(main
key?) I see 4 lines.
1st says Allow - Your (PC Name)\HpAdmin Full Control Current_User
This
key &
subkeys
2nd Allow SYSTEM .....
3rd Allow Administrator (Your PC) ....
4th Allow RESTRICTED .....

Under the 2nd (subkey) says Default REG_SZ (value not set). As
you
suggest
Replace permissions is NOT cked. But I am real confused her about
this
whole
section. My subkey already looks as you described.

I am real confused here. Why only this 1 passwd? Thanks again.

:

It seems that for about a week IE is no longer keeping my
password
when I
log on to Hotmail.
It is set to remember the signon id & pswd. The id stays, the
circle
is
checked (green dot),
yet what I log off the computer it seems to remove the pswd.

It seems to keep all my other logon info to other sites
(cookies).
I
have
tried clearing temp Inet files, &
deleted cookies. The problem still persists. I could just check
rem.
id
only
and keep retyping the pswd.
but since I am the only one ot use this pc why should I?

That plus it seems to think everytime I open IE there is a
popup.
Popup
controls are set to low.
For now I turned it off. I never saw any site listed in the tab.

Could this have something to do w/MS latest IE6 sec. patch?
Seems
that
this
is when it started,
after this weeks patch. PC is set to automaticaly get updates.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

nass,
thanks for all your suggestions over the last wk. It Is nbd that for some
odd reason MSN is no longer holding the pswd.
since all the suggestions failed I am just going to live w/it. Who knows
maybe someday MS will put out another sec. update and all will be as it was
again<g>. Afa IE7 until MS puts out it's 1st couple of patches I will hold
off. From what I read it is still what many MS *new* programs are, overblown
"beta progs."

I mean just look thru this newsgrp. Many complaints about IE7. So for now I
will wait. Thanks again.

if you from time to time try to input your password just in case you

Come to if you put the CD in or start with it and given you the Option to

will give you the options to install, Repair, or Quit if you unsure you
can
always select Quit.
