IE6 meltdown. How to reinstall

My copy of Internet Explorer has totally died on me. It will open up OK
and it appears to locate the file I'm trying to access but it only
displays a blank page.

Not only that but most of the menu options will not do anything
including [File][Open], [Tools][Internet Options], or even
[Help][About].

I've had the 'blank page' error before and this is definitely something
different so the usual fixes

regsvr32 ***.dll (that list of five or six dlls)
iefix application.

Will not work.

I've also tried reinstalling the latest cumulative IE update and even
reinstalling SP2 but to no avail.

I've even tried disabling all plugins (via the control panel as I can't
even accessthat form inside IE)

Is there any other way of reinstalling IE6 on an SP2 computer?

Please don't suggest I move to Firefox or another browser. I'm in no
doubt they do certain things miles better than IEexplorer but they're
still not so much better that I want to completely ditch IExplorer,
especially as...

a) I've got several essential IE plugins that just are not available on
any other browser
b) I need it to test any website I design
c) Windows Update won't work without IE

Had same thing myself a week or so ago.
It may have been a lousy recent MS patch plus an install of a
virus/internet security package.
The only fix that worked was to download a beta version of IE7 and then
replace IE6 to get it to work.
It took me days to get nowhere.
Ran virus scans, adware checkers, all sorts of stuff but still no fix
Whatever damage has been done even prevents systems restore from working.
It's probably something to do with activeX fixes that may not work right.
I was lucky that I did have firefox installed else I would have been
totally dead.
Suggest that even if you don't want to use firefox just install it
anyway for a backup need.
If you are on IE6 with XP SP2 then it is pretty much impossible to
reinstall.
I did try all ways but gave up and then went IE7.
Cheers

Actually I've already got Firefox and (even more fortunate right now) a
spare PC so at least I can get access to the internet.

I've managed to scan the PC with Hijack This as well as Homecall on top
of my usual anti malware app which didn't find a thing.

I tried your IE7 beta fix but that didn't work either. My *really*
essential plugin won't work on IE7 either so I can't really substitute
that right now either.

Unfortunately, I decided to try a repair install of XP and now things
are even worse with repair install hanging with 34 minutes to go.
I tried the usual fix of removing all peripherals and disabling every
non essential from the BIOS but that has fixed things either.

So now that PC is completely brain dead. I've still got access to that
PC's hard disk so I would like (if possible) to reset the 'repair
install' as I think I may have given it the wrong drivers the first
time around. Anyone know how? The first time I attempted the repair
install (with everything still connected) I got type in the reg key but
since my many retries I don't get that anymore. I've got the feeling
that if I can start from scratch, I might be bale to get the thing
going again but don't know how. As I said, I can still access that HD
so if anyone knows what temporary files hold what, maybe I could
persuade the repair install to start from scratch again. Off to another
newsgroup now to see how I can get out of this particular frying pan
I've manged to jump into.
