Hello, I would appreciate any help with the following:

Somehow the ActiveX control for auto-updating MS software
is disabled or damaged. As there is no other way to
update software, I am stranded here. Also, IE doesn't
allow me to access any secure site. Not sure if this is
related to previous problem. Tried to install the latest
IE but my system would not let me due to "unsigned
certificate" or some such.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

I tried this one time and then could reconnect to Windows
Update if that is your problem.

I have tried this:

DON'T TYPE THE """ and if you think I have typed a "space
mark" then I have.

Go to Start-Run and then type "CMD" and then Return.
Then type "net stop cryptsvc" and then press Return
Then type"ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 old catroot2
and then press Enter
Then type "net start cryptsvc"

I think the above deals with some of this Certificate
stuff. I then do the below.

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL"
(w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that
this process succeeded.

2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL"
(w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that
this process succeeded. I THINK I ONLY SEE THE POPUP
WHEN I ENTER TWICE AND THEN I SEE BOTH POPUPS.

3. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL"
(w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that
this process succeeded.
4. Now try the Windows Update site and see if you get
the same error.

I don't know which of the above made the "fix" but I
didn't care since it allowed me to go to Windows Update
and load the gazillion Critical updates I was behind on.
