When I click on the IE icon, IE launches. At the top of IE window it shows
the name of my dafualt site (yahoo.com), but in the lower left hand corner of
the page it show an internet address of 1.0.0.0.0. This does not happen
everytime I launch IE, but about every four time. After waiting 30 seconds,
the IE window fnally dispalys some unknown site that includes yahoo.com. If
some cases I must restart the computer to reset IE to work correctly.

This issue just started couple of weeks ago. Nothing new added to computer.
Spybot and Adaware used to clean system up.

Ideas?

Looks like a DNS problem made worse by it trying to do a search
when a normal lookup fails.

Start keeping track of the DNS addresses you are getting.
E.g. go to a cmd window and enter:

ipconfig /all

Alternatively enter:

nslookup

(without operands) to see at least the primary server address
but then you will have to enter exit to leave nslookup's interactive
mode.

Do it both when you think you are getting very good service
and when you are seeing your problem symptoms.

If you detect a pattern to the addresses you are getting you could
specify (in TCP/IP Properties e.g., via the connection's Properties)
that you want to use a specific DNS address (e.g. the one which seems better).

Notify your ISP that you suspect they have a bad server
and explain why.

BTW make sure that your Home page is a fully
specified URL because I think that a similar symptom
(minus the 1.0.0.0 symptom) could occur if you
only have a partial URL specified for it.

Note that while IE is involved with this problem that the real expertise
you need is probably in a networking newsgroup.

In any case here is an interactive troubleshooter which you can try.
It contains a link to an XP newsgroup which specializes in networking.

Good luck
