IE6 Installation Problems

I am working on Win2K Pro. Due to some reasons, I had to repair the
Win2K installation which completed successfully.

Now when I am trying to install IE6.0 (from a CD), the setup aborts at
the 6% mark & generates the following error:

----------
Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and try running Setup again.
----------

I close all applications & run setup again only to encounter the same
error at the 6% mark. I even tried a fresh installation after the setup
failed but it just refuses to install IE6.0.

When I click the 'Help' button on the error dialog, the help file says

----------
It appears you have the correct setup files, but installation failed.
Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If
that still does not work, contact Microsoft Product Support Services
for additional help.
----------

What could be going wrong?

First, Win2K crashed & now IE6.0 is refusing to install! My machine has
become a patience-tester for me.

Please note that this isn't the first time I am trying to install IE6.0
from the CD that I am using currently.....I have used it number of
times to install IE6.0 but this is the first time, I am encountering
such this error.

Hi rn5a,

Obviously your repair of Win2k installation was not completely sucessful. IE
comes with the OS when it is installed. Depending upon exactly what you did
to 'repair' your OS you can try a re-install of IE6 with the following run
command.

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi,IndtallHinfSection DefaultInstall
132 %windir%\inf\ie.inf

You will need your Windows CD.

Regards.

Rob, IE did get installed when I repaired the OS but it was IE5 & not
IE6. I don't think that the W2K repair was unsuccessful because I have
no problems now in logging in to my machine.

Moreover I also executed the following 2 commands:

SFC /SCANNOW

&

SFC /PURGECACHE

& both of them checked all the Windows system files.

I tried out running

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi,IndtallHinfSection
DefaultInstall

but it throws an error saying:

Error in setupapi
Missing entry: IndtallHinfSection

I guess the command you have cited should have been

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall

i.e. after setapi, it should have been 'InstallHinfSection' & not
'IndtallHinfSection'. I am not very sure about it but when I executed
the command by changing 'IndtallHinfSection' to 'InstallHinfSection',
then also I get an error that says 'Installation failed.'

Could you please give me a concrete solution to install IE6 in my
machine?

Since last 2 days, all my work have come to a standstill just because I
am not able to install IE6. I have gone through many articles & tried
so many things but none of the helped me out.

I beg of you.....PLEASE help me resolve this problem.......PLEASE...

Hi rn5a,

If you have v5 sucessfully installed you can repair/upgrade it to v6 with
this run command

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE

(runs the IE Maintenance utility)

(though this seems to have been changed on my Win2K machine)

Regards.

Did you format & reinstall Win2K?

No I DIDN'T format & install Win2K. I REPAIRED Win2K after which IE6 is
refusing to install.

Sir could you PLEASE give me a solution to resolve this problem? I am

I tried running

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE

but it says

Error in setupwbv.dll
Missing entry:IE

Rob, using the following

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE /g "C:\WINNT\IE Uninstall Log.txt"

I was given 3 options - Add a component (which was disabled), Repair
Internet Explorer & Restore the previous Windows configuration.

I tried to repair but saying that IE cannot be repaired due to the
following reasons:

Version 5.0.2929.0 of file BROWSELC.DLL exists, but the version needs
to be greater than 6.0.2462.0
Version 5.0.2929.0 of file BROWSEUI.DLL exists, but the version needs
to be greater than 6.0.2462.0
Version 5.0.2929.0 of file SHDOCVW.DLL exists, but the version needs to
be greater than 6.0.2462.0
Version 5.0.2929.0 of file SHLWAPI.DLL exists, but the version needs to
be greater than 6.0.2462.0

So I can't even repair IE.

PLEASE....PLEASE....PLEASE.....someone PLEASE give me a solution to
install IE6 before I lose my job.

Chances are, then, that the Repair Install didn't fix the problem. If it's
not a hardware problem, I'd either format & reinstall Windows or run a
/thorough/ check for hijackware.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Correct. Because of your repair you regressed those modules
to whatever versions of them the repair gives for the version of IE
e.g., perhaps as low as the one that was installed originally with the OS.
Then when you tried to do your SFC the newer versions from the
various service packs and updates would have been wiped out,
so it wouldn't have been able to work properly either.

Unfortunately the DLL Help Database doesn't even document
that version so I'm wondering if your repair disk was created by
a slipstreamed process?

Hmm... I can find only one reference to that version and unfortunately
it doesn't help clarify which version of the product they are thinking of:

(Live Search for
"5.00.2929.0000"
)

In any case, I think that you may be able to use KB318378 to install IE6sp1a
in your W2K. Other users of that OS have reported that the procedure
worked for them but I don't know exactly what their starting point was.

Good luck
