Hello

A few days ago a friend asked me to upgrade her IE6 to the new IE7. I surfed
the net and found a download offered by Yahoo!. The download was advertised
as "IE7 Optomized for Yahoo!". I downloaded the .exe file, and installed it
onto my friend's PC. After the install was complete I opened up the browser
to see a Yahoo! homepage & a title bare that read Yahoo!. My friend wanted
her previous homepage back, so I went into Tools - Internet Options- General
tab, typed in the address of her previous homepage and, clicked on the
"Apply" button. I closed the browser and re-opened it. But the Yahoo!
homepage was back. I even surfed to he preferred homepage and clicked the
"Use Current" button. But Yahoo! would just come back after re-opening the
browser. I downloaded a number of anti-spyware and anti-hijack programs in an
effort to rectify the problem. But none of the programs solved the problem. A
couple of the programs did alert me that the browser was hijacked. I was able
to eliminate the Yahoo tool bar add-ons by going to the Program tab in
Internet Options and clicking on "Add-Ons"; disabling them. Also, I went into
the registry and tried to solve the problem by following the methods
published (for this particular annoyance) on the Microsoft Knowledge Base
site. Still no success. I even uninstalled IE6 and re-installed it, and that
did not solve the problem. Lastly, i tried to upgrade the browser (5 times)
with IE7 from the MS download site. But IE7 would not install. The remedy was
to download and install "Firefox." After that, "Thank God" I was able to
configure the Firefox browser to open up on my friend's preferred homepage.
But she also prefers IE6; to open at her preferred homepage.
Can anyone tell how to get rid of this Yahoo! homepage short of formatting
the hard drive and re-installing Windows Media Center OS?

A good place to start in by running the regedit command.
This will place you in the windows registry. Do a search in the registry on
the website that keeps incessantly popping up.
You can most likely delete that piece of the registry and the hood that it
falls under.
There might be multiple areas of the registry that contain it.

Another area to check... run the msconfig program, look for the startup
tab, then uncheck anything that looks even slightly suspicious.

Once I added Norton Antivirus software this type of problem never came back.
Hope this helps.
