Ah...
1. Uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.
2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your
HijackThis log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis
(
http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to
use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30
or other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**
3. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean
bill of health.

Yes, but in an effort to fix the problem. It was occuring with SP1 as
well
Did you *upgrade* from an earlier Windows version (e.g., Win98)
to WinXP
SP1, and then install WinXP SP2?
No, this machine has always had XP Pro installed
But did you just recently install/update to WinXP SP2?

It was an automatic update

Did this "persistant and vexing problem" predate the
updating/upgrading?
No, it worked fine before, same as the laptop I referred to.
Thanks for your interest, I really hope I can get this sorted out.

Good Question. Unfortunately, can't say for sure, though it
was an IE6 upgrade, not an OS upgrade. I subsequently
upgraded the OS from SP1 to SP2 with the hope that the newer
associated version of IE6 would heal itself. No luck.
I'm flummoxed.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
I'm about ready to go to Firefox.

After a recent upgrade a persistant and vexing problem
with IE6 has developed.
What upgrade?

I am unable to open more than one instance or window of
IE6, either by
going to the desktop and double clicking the icon, or (and
most annoyingly!) when clicking a link within a web site
such as to view a "Most Emailed Photo" on the yahoo site.
It simply goes to the photo, shuts the original browser
session and leaves me dead-ended without even a back
button. The operating system is XP Pro SP2. the IE
version is
6.0.2900.2180... The pop-up blocker is turned off. There
are to external tool bars installed (eg Google or Yahoo.)
I have a laptop with the same OS and IE version and it
works properly. I
have compared the settings on the two machines and they
appear to be the same.
I'm stuck.
HELP!
