I have recently encountered a problem with IE6 when I attempt to play live
audio from various news web sites. This can also occur with live news video,
but not always.

When the browser works correctly some web sites offer a choice of media
players, either WMP or Real Audio, prior to opening a default player, but
now I get a blank window with 'Unknown zone' displayed at the bottom, and
the hour glass cycles continuously, necessitating a CNTRL/ALT/Delete.

The problem doesn't appear to be related to any particular media player.

I also have a BTYahoo Broadband Browser and this works fine.

I have deleted all cookies and Temp Internet files, but this has not cured
the problem.

To compound the issue further, I now find that System Restore is not
behaving itself. I have tried several restore points, and the computer goes
through the usual procedure of restoring the files, then re-boots. Finally I
get an error message stating that Windows could not restore to that
particular restore point, 'try another restore point'. I am not sure if all
other restore points will also fail.

Unless I can pin point the actual cause of the problem, I would like to know
if it is possible to restore IE6 on it's own, without resorting to a full
Windows XP reinstallation.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is a typical Add on problem that is pretty common with IE6.
If you run Windows XP with SP2 and IE6 with SP1 you can check add ons easy.
Try to update them or update the acctual multimedia program that plays the
file.

Well known case is Quick Time player taht ussually needs to be latest version.
Today use 7.1.x.. had users with 7.0.3 and it crashed/froze their Internet
Explorer.

You can also upgrade to IE7, but that is not needed to solve this problem.

What do you get in the Event Viewer log?

Thanks for your response.
I am afraid I don't know where to find the Even Viewer Log.
Can you explain please?

As for your System restore issue:

How to troubleshoot the System Restore tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/en-us

If no joy, post to the WinXP newsgroup as that is an OS issue:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...er.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

As for your last question:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP (Q318378)

Other things to try are to uninstall/reinstall WMP and Real, and
update/reinstall the drivers for your video and sound cards.

And since this seems to involve WMP, post this issue to that newsgroup as
well:
