I get the following message quite frequently and wonder if anyone can help
rectify the problem?
IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault
in module USER.EXE at 0003:00006ad6.

Quite often such messages are related to some part of IE being broken by
spyware so if you have not already done so check for that type of infection.

Sometimes the error message is not exactly related to the cause of the
problem - kinda like knowing which card caused the house of cards to fall -
so eliminating spyware is a good place to start.

The next best clue is often something you remember doing just before this
problem showed up. For example an install with the Antivirus running will
sometimes fail because a file didn't get replaced properly, so it would be
helpful to know if you have any security software running and if so what it
is.

If you have not done so see if any of these products find anything. In
general the MS Antispyware product seems a safe thing to run and it does
offer some protection in real time.

Important - LSP-Fix

Be aware that using either of these to actually remove spyware can result in
some programs refusing to work, in other words "Free" programs that you
downloaded on condition you accepted ads and so called "Research" may get
broken and you might want to uninstall them first. Some spyware actually
breaks Windows trying to force it's way in and you should arm yourself with
LSP-Fix before starting in case you lose internet connectivity.

Thanks for your reply. I have AVG anti virus, Zone Alarm firewall and PC
Tools SpywareDoctor/Registry Mechanic installed and have run full scans on
all. I have run spy bot which did not find any infections. I will monitor IE
and let you know if the problem persists. I have W98 SE installed.

I don't know the PCTools utility but that kind of thing must be turned off
during updates because if it tries to protect the registry from malware it
will also stop software you want being registered properly.
