Hi,

I'm running Win98SE, and use IE as my main browser. Last
July it spent a few days giving me the "IE had encountered
a problem and needs to close....error report click here"
box, but would let me reopen IE right away. Then all of a
sudden that box happened upon trying to open it. For 2
days I tried everything I could think of, managing to go
online with Netscape like I'm doing now. I ran
adaware, deleted what it found, downloaded the security
patch and the updates, and ran everything. It still
wouldn't open, but then on the 3rd day it just opened all
of a sudden. I hadn't even tried, but I was so happy it
was working I just left it alone. (I also reinstalled my
firewall). It worked fine until a few days ago.

It won't open again, goes straight to the error box. If I
view the error report it refers to:
Error signature
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
shell32.dll
ModVer: 4.72.3812.600 Offset: 0001af2

Then, if I open the technical info, I get the following 23
modules referred to (with their respective version info and
stuff), followed by a long stack of numbers.
1. MYDOCS.DLL 2. MSI.DLL 3. MSONSEXT.DLL 4.
VERSION.DLL 5. SHFOLDER.DLL 6. WININET.DLL 7.
OLEAUT32.DLL 8. CRYPT32.DLL 9. RPCRT4.DLL 10.
MSOSS.DLL 11. BROWSELC.DLL 12. BROWSEUI.DLL 13.
OLE32.DLL 14. SHELL32.DLL 15. IEXPLORE.EXE 16.
SHDOCVW.DLL 17. COMCTL32.DLL 18. SHLWAPI.DLL 19.
USER32.DLL 20. GDI32.DLL 21. ADVAPI32.DLL 22.
MSVCRT.DLL 23. KERNEL32.DLL

I ran adaware yesterday after rerunning the security patch
and updates on IE. I deleted what adaware found and reran
it, it's clean. I also ran Norton and it was clean.
Still not working.

I have gone through a bit of this newsgroup and wrote down
stuff to try. I disabled 3rd party browser extensions and
am about to go restart the computer and see if that works,
after I download spybot and run that. I was just wondering
if all this doesn't work, if there was something more
specific to this particular set of errors that someone
could help me with. You can reply here I guess but I would
really appreciate if you could also send me a copy at my
email 'cus Netscape is acting really wonky and it's hard to
browse with it. My email is jennifer(at)jeloca.com

thank you so much!

Jennifer.

Hi jennifer :-)

If your AV does not have the definitions to look for other than known
viruses, it will not detect or clean other types of warez. Also, Adaware
defintions looks for and cleans adwarez.

You may still have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. In addition to running your updated anti-virus and
AdAware
programs, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present
on
your system. Some variants of malware can replicate themselves over and
over if not removed properly. Please follow all instructions carefully to
be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

(You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these:

the beginning, it will automatically handle downloading the other files.
Place them in a dedicated folder after appropriate unzipping, and then run.
This scan may take a long time, as Sysclean is VERY extensive and thorough

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:

Hi,

I am going to print or copy/paste this message and try it
out between now and the weekend. I've already ran the
shredder prog, spy-bot and adaware and deleted the few
things found, with still no luck. I periodically try
re-running the ie6setup.exe including reinstalling it over
itself, and running the patch and update, with no luck.
I've rebooted more times than i can count. I'll try the
other stuff you listed below before I completely freak out
and start to sweat!

:) thanks,

Jennifer.
