IE6 doesn't know how to handle streaming link

This is an example of the streaming media files on MPR's
Prairie Home Companion which my system will not trust and
when I direct it to open the file with IE6 it gives me a
text copy of the source code. My system parses the link
which I quote below and then tells me that it has a file
called http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/play/ and that
files of this type are application/smil

http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/play/audio.php?media=/2004/04/17_phc

My event viewer gives me only two 'error' events which may
have something to do with this malfunction:

both are event number 1,
the first reads that it encountered the unexpected error
'0xC0000040' while processing the file 'hurl.exe-2.lnk' and
turned off system restore

the second reads that it ecountered the same error while
processing the file 'audio.php.lnk' and again turned off
system restore.

I have no malware on my system and the realplayer plugins
handle all the real streaming codecs once they get to them.

The file associations for PHP and SMI files are with IE6.

Please advise how I should proceed with this problem -
which is also affecting my listening at other sites which
have software players which place the stream inside other code.

thanks in advance

It works for me fine in both IE6 and Opera 7.5. Alternative browsers, such as
Opera give the user much more control over how file types are handled. For IE,
try the Folder Options control panel, and then click on File Types and look for
SMIL.

did that about ten steps back already but thanks for your
valuable and careful reply.
My IE6 version has no SMIL file type to associate - only SMI.
Firefox won't manage the url either, even if I associate
the SMI files with Realplayer, which is the recommended
player for the MPR site.
I again ask if there is anyone who can illuminate why my os
will not parse these files.

thanks for writing. such a nice person:-)

You're welcome. My file types lists both SMI and SMIL. Are you using the
latest version of RealPlayer? Version 10.0, build 6.0.12.857

yes. I downloaded the latest version only a few days ago.

I am going to add the SMIL to the file handling list. Can
you suggest what type of file I should call it to let the
browser helper handle it? Application/audio?

thanks again for your time and help:-)

update

I checked with a few other users today and some have the
smil and php files associated with RealPlayer.
So I changed these in my file associations and I now have
the link being handled via IE6 to open the stream in
RealPlayer.

It still doesn't get handled by FirefFox - Real is unable
to work out which plugins to fetch - however I am not going
to fuss anymore over such complicated code as long as at
least one browser is handling it.

thanks for yr interest and time :-)
